No, just to a man named Robert DePriest born in 1665 in Paris, France from what I have been able to discern. I think the aristocracy in France was pretty much gone by that point and I have no way to go back further. I also have a Thomas Mims, born about 1620 in England. It is kind of fun chasing these things back.

I don't know in French, but in Spanish the "de" does not always denote aristocracy (I'd say more often doesn't). It also means "from", so it was used in times when surnames were often just the town where someone's family came from, or the name of the father/mother.

Like Jean d'Arc? (Joan of Arc to us Brits, The Maid of Orleans to many).

Regards,

Ian.

I had always heard that in French it was "of" similar to "from". Actually Zelda's comment was the first time I had heard it was tied to aristocracy which was caused my comment in the first place. Oh well, I couldn't take the notoriety anyway I suppose

yes, "de" means of or from in french, when it is in a name as an independent word (i.e. like "de Noailles", not like "Dupont" which also means "from the bridge") it frequently indicates some sort of aristocracy as it can indicate that the name is a "grande famille" of a specific region. it doesn't *always* mean nobility, of course, but quite often it does. like in english, you have the "Duke of Sandwich" (or whatever) ; it's the same indication in french.
