I usually don't find any requirement to re-read when I pick up the next book in a series, even when it's been as much as a year since I read the prior one. I think that if I did need to do the re-reading, I might take the same approach and avoid the series until it was complete.

I don't always require the re-read to keep up either, but "as much as a year"...?? That's pretty-much the shortest wait possible. My waits are more often 2-5 years. And although my memory is pretty sharp, I hate remembering ENOUGH from the previous book to get by. I want it ALL fresh in my mind.

But it's honestly not really just about "remembering" for me, though (not only anyway). It all depends on the series format. Mostly self-contained installments coming out every year? Sure, I'll read something like that as they're published. No problem. But one story that's spread over 3 or 4+ books (and maybe 6-10+ years)?? Nah. If I like it, I want to read the whole story together. In one go.

Just like I'd never voluntarily stop reading a great (stand-alone) book for years at a time while I read other books.
