Yes, you are not allowed to be on the board of a media company if you are pro-maximising sales.

Also, they must be falling around laughing at Amazon as their rivals *voluntarily* restrict themselves to being small regional players.

Gives them more excuses to whinge about how damaging piracy is and how it is ruining their profit stream.

Got this same email today. Nice that they provided an ample degree of advance notice on the change!

One throught--I had understood that most UK publishers maintained "Commonwealth Rights" which would mean that some of these ebooks should legitimately be available outside of the UK/Ireland. If that's the case, Waterstones is applying a stricter constraint than is actually necessary.

I also received the email over the weekend (as with some others, this is several days after the ban came into force). I just have to shake my head in disgust these days - it's just so frustrating. What is even more irritating is that half the time, you can't even purchase the ebook direct from the publisher!

Thanks for letting us know about this Pippa. Just a point you might want to consider - kobobooks is basically the same as Borders Australia and Whitcoulls in NZ, so you will find that basically the same selection is available in all three stores (and all three have the worlds worst search engine!)

Thanks for this. Whitcoulls is almost always more expensive than kobobooks. I haven't bought an ebook through Whitcolls for ages because of the prices - especially when it WAS just as easy to purchase from the UK much cheaper (no longer though). I will check out Borders Australia .

An hour ago, I tried to buy *Life* by Keith Richards at Barnes & Noble. Guess what ... we detect that your account is not registered in the UK or Eire and this ebook is not available to you for download.

Yours. Very Angry of Menton (Mrs)
Barnes and Noble are extremely picky about where you are located, Sony less so. I can buy from Sony US Store, but not Barnes & Noble, even with a $50 Gift Card that I bought when I was in the USA in the summer. I have to get a friend in the US to press the buy button, and download the book (against the gift card) and then email me the book. Nonsensical, and not worth pursuing once the card is used up.

So does Amazon... There are plenty of books I can't buy from Amazon. But at least they do sell some...

Not only Sony users. Also BeBook Users, or CyBook users, or Irex users... Actually, all readers but the Kindle can't read Kindle book without stripping...

That really sucks. I bought from waterstones simply because they had books that weren't available in the US. Notably, my first purchase from them was The Third Pig Detective Agency.

Really a shame.

I can't agree with you more.

I'm losing confidence in the publishers. Not really sure it's worth anymore supporting them. Let them discuss piracy whatever they want, but instead of solving it by making books available, they are making it worse by dangling the carrot but not giving it...

If the retailers or US publisher could tell you who has the distribution rights in your country, you would know where to get your books or at least pester for availability.

Any restrictions of Amazon for ebooks aren't voluntary - have they ever said 'we will not sell any books to anyone from this country, ever again'?

There are definitely titles they won't sell to some people, but that is the fault of the publisher/author/agent combination.
