It's Kobo's slightly altered epub format that enables them to implement fast page scroll through, reading statistics and other improvements on their devices.

You could have easily just DuckDuckGo'd this information, though.

A kepub is an epub with extra spans, possibly javascript, etc. added by Kobo. A Kobo ereader has two renderers, one is Adobe RMSDK based which allowed reading epubs with Adobe's ADEPT DRM, the other is a Webkit based renderer which has better epub3 support and uses those extra spans when selecting text, can use Javascript for interactive features, etc.

The two renderers have some differences in how text is displayed. To my tastes, RMSDK does a better job of rendering text/fonts while the Webkit based renderer is required when reading a epub3 ebook that makes use of the more advanced features such as fixed layout, embedded audio, etc.

A simple search on MobileRead comes up with quite a few hits such as Epub vs kepub from 2021.

Truly, the google fu is running weak these days.

There are few reasons why Kepubs are preferable to epubs but the main reason I opt for them is performance. Interacting with Kepubs is much snappier; a significant speed boost.

I disagree with that. KePub is not much snappier. They are roughly the same speed.

Of course, you could be running an older firmware where this used to be true.

It's still pretty true today. It used to be much worse, true enough, but it's still fairly bad, especially compared to competitors (*mumble* kindles *mumble*).
