No, I was saying Harry's method did not work.

I already knew how to set the justification from inside the ebook. And yes, if the justification is hard coded then the user cannot change it.

Nice. Why do they hide those options?

Is there a hack to make the Kindle itself not look ridiculous? If I could get books for the device over whispernet from other sources, I would consider it to at least have some magic potential.

Alright, I'm sure if you go back and read what you just wrote, you can edit it so that it makes a bit more sense.

However, ridiculous is one of those things (like beauty) that is in the eye of the beholder. I have to respect a person and their opinions before I give any credence to what they think is ridiculous, or cool, or ugly, or beautiful, or anything else for that matter. Otherwise, I just get the impression that they are trolling for a flame war.

And .... those sorts of conflicts are so last year.

You can get books from Feedbooks and Mobileread using Whispernet. You can also buy from Fictionwise (multiformat) and have them sent to your Kindle... but that costs $.10 per send.

And, ten cents is not a bad price for the convenience.

But as long as we're sort of on the topic of people's opinions about what is or what is not cool or ridiculous ... I would be willing to hazard a guess that jplumey is (1) young and (2) male.

I have never been able to understand the juvenile human male's need to denegrate anything and everything they (1) are not or (2) do not own. I know it probably goes back to the male need for comparing penises and such. But seriously .... has bad-mouthing the competition really worked for any of you (males, I mean) in the past??

I know that is how the mass media markets a lot of thing to you ... you aren't "cool" if you don't have this model of car or smoke this type of cigarette ... and on and on and on .... but really (?) you do feel "cool" once you've bought the car or smoked the ciggie?? And, pray tell, how long does the feeling last? Five minutes? A lifetime?? You really think that's going to get you the (1) girl or (2) job of your dreams??

Because, from a female perspective ... it doesn't work so well. Not for getting girls, not for making friends, not for making the impression that will get you the job. Pretty much not at all.

I have a Kindle. I like the Kindle. That's why I bought the Kindle. You have a Sony (or whatever you have). I will assume that you got it because you like it. Saying awful things about the type of ebook that I happen to like is not going to make me question my purchase as much as it is going to make me think you are second guessing your own purchase and trying to puff yourself up by calling it cool.

And, that will make me respect you less ... that's assuming I respected you in the first place.

In my opinion (and it is only my opinion), all ebook readers probably do the job for their owners, or those people would go out and get other readers. Sort of like our skins do their job holding in our organs .... and I don't really give a hoot what color your's is, and would appreciate you not saying anything hateful simply because mine happens to be lighter or darker than yours.

As long as I've dragged out a soapbox and am now standing on it ... I'm not even certain that people of even marginal intelligence would think it appropriate to say something that insults a fair portion of the members of a forum, especially of a forum that is primarily about the free exchange of ideas (which is what reading is all about anyway).

jplumey ... consider yourself formally ignored. I simply can't imagine that you have anything to say that I need to hear or read. Enjoy your Sony, I mean that most sincerely. I hope your choice of reading provides you with some maturity over time.

Wow, touchy? I was just expressing my opinion about the device. I didn't insult anyone personally, just the design of the Kindle. So having an opinion about something with which you disagree is immature? If that's so, I am quite happy to be immature.

So let's see here. I made a post about the Kindle, and your response is to call me:

- juvenile
- immature
- stupid ("marginal intelligence")
- not respectable

Nice. Well done.

I'll let you [female person] in on a secret. We didn't compare penises. At least not the groups I was part of. We sat around comparing girlfriends. The one with the hottest one was the stud... no matter what size package he had.

I think the word caddy says... see female in the dictionary.

It figures that it wouldn't be the smartest girlfriend that would confer status. Whenever people posit a future in which "man" has evolved into some sort of big brained super whiz ... I simply remind them that as long as intelligent men prefer looks over brains, the human race will retain its current level of intelligence.

Looked up "female" .... the definition doesn't seem to support your point.

Well since RickyMaveety won't see this..."I did not intend to start a flame war, and I had no idea that a simple (and badly misspelled) post would incite your wrath. If I have offended thee, I apologize."

I looked at your post, and carefully analyzed it. In a very mild manner you expressed a negative opinion about the appearance of the Kindle. There was nothing wrong in what you said or in the way you said it.

P.S. I was one of the first to get a Kindle. I like it, but I also think the Kindle is ugly.

I have to admit I do, too. I love my Kindle but I do find the design questionable. It came down to function over form for me, but I do think the looks aren't helping convince people to try it especially since it really does look a lot worse in photos than in person.

And Nate ... saying you "think" something is ugly is different than expressing it as a fact. One is an opinion ... and it's an opinion that you are certainly entitled to, and one that I am entitled to hold in very low esteem.

What I do respect is that you like your Kindle despite your opinion as to its looks. That makes you a smart consumer.

I'll stand by my own opinion of jplumley and his ilk, and exlude them and their opinions, however factually stated, and feel pretty darn good about doing so.
