The Long Divorce (APA: A Noose for Her) is the 8th in the Gervase Fen series by Edmund Crispin. It is a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about one more day.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Long-Divorce-...dp/B00KGF0CDO/

Spoiler:
Quote:
As inventive as Agatha Christie, as hilarious as P.G. Wodehouse - discover the delightful detective stories of Edmund Crispin. Crime fiction at its quirky best.

The peaceful and prosperous village of Cotten Abbas has a very unpleasant problem.

Long inhabited by a collection of proudly offbeat locals, there has been a recent influx of the newly rich and very well to do… and not everyone is happy about it.

New arrivals are receiving anonymous letters that know a little too much about dark secrets and dirty laundry and they don’t seem likely to stop.

Gervase Fen is summoned to the scene, but soon finds more than he bargained for. A suicide on Friday, a murder by Sunday, and some villagers that seem hell bent on keeping this mystery unsolved…

Gently With Love is slightly less than halfway through the George Gently series by Alan Hunter. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Gently-Love-A...dp/B00OGUP1YK/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/gently-with-love-3

Spoiler:
Quote:
The unflappable Inspector George Gently has become a household name through the hit BBC TV series starring Martin Shaw. These are the original books on which the TV series was based, although the George Gently in Alan Hunter's whodunits is somewhat different to his TV counterpart. He is more calculating, more analytical, and his investigations are even more enthralling.

In this title:
Gently sets out for the north of Scotland to help clear one of his oldest friends of a murder charge and reunite him with the woman he loves. A love story founders on the rocks of the wild coastline of western Scotland when a man falls to his death. Did he fall or was he pushed? The knife wounds on his body tend to suggest the latter. Although he knows his rank gives him no status in Scotland, Gently travels north to help out, the prime suspect being a close friend.

Despite the fact that the evidence weighs heavily against him, Gently cannot bring himself to believe that his friend committed murder, even if the victim was a hated love rival. He must use all of his skill as a detective to find a way to prove his friend?s innocence. Highland hospitality, however, doesn?t always extend to cooperating with a murder investigation.

Free on Amazon UK today - The Woman in the Sea by Shelley Smith

Spoiler:
It begins with a gruesome discovery…

While on an outing to the beach, thirteen-year-old Meg and the other children find what at first sight looks like a pretty piece of seaweed, but turns out to be the body of a woman floating among the rocks with a gunshot wound to the head…

Mr Bertram Robinson is a man in the middle of his life, marriage had never been something he was attracted to.

He once had the affections of a lady called Marion, however after she left him, he felt he could never love again.

Years later however, he married a young lady called Zoë and now an elderly man with failing health, Zoë takes care of the children as well as Mr Robinson himself.

Zoë is an exuberant person and enjoys the affections of younger men, often buying them gifts.

As her actions escalate, she meets a young teenage boy called Arthur Emery and although he is inexperienced with women, he becomes infatuated with Zoë who only encourages his feelings by playing with him…

After Zoë kisses Arthur, he falls completely in love with her and repeatedly asks her to choose between him and her husband, Mr Robinson whom she will not leave.

In her attempts to maintain her idyllic fantasy, Zoë soon finds herself embroiled in a grim tragedy in which she becomes the centre-piece.

Following a long trial that proves mentally taxing for all involved, the relationships will never be the same again…
But who is really to blame?

Free on Amazon UK today - Written in Blood (A DCI Marlin Thriller Book 3) by David McGlone

Spoiler:
Aldous ‘Al’ Andrews is a psychologist. Having worked on some high-profile murder cases, he’s gained some fame. Now, his own past is in question…

Al’s wife Anne and her lover Steve disappeared many years earlier, on a trip to Boston.

One of the men he helped put away, a serial killer named Mark Rennie, insists Al killed them.

And now DCI Marlin is looking into matters. Just as he’s asking Al some uncomfortable questions, a body is found at a home in Stratford, a home, curiously enough, once owned by Al.

But when another body shows up, and Al can’t remember what he did, things are as scary as they were when Rennie was hunting them.

But Rennie’s dead, isn’t he?

When the body found at Al’s old flat turns out to be a former cop, no one knows what to think.

But when bodies start showing up with numbers painted above them, and Marlin discovers the victims are all connected to Al and Rennie, it starts to look like a hit list of some kind.

Al and Lara decide to go away for the weekend to escape and when Al is identified by a beautiful woman, Sarah, alarm bells ring, and he knows she is connected to Rennie.

But how? And what does she want?

As the body count rises, Marlin grows more and more convinced that his friend Al might have a few demons in his own past, especially when Al’s wife Anne and her lover Steve are found dead.

But if Rennie is going to be stopped, Marlin needs Al’s help to get inside his mind.

All too soon it becomes apparent that Sarah is not just a pretty face.

And now that she and Rennie are a couple, who knows what they will do, or if they’ll ever be caught…

Free on Amazon UK today - Stolen Lives (A Danny Sanchez Thriller Book 2) by Matthew Pritchard

Spoiler:
Almería, Spain. A missing girl is found in a landfill, dead…

The right-wing press has an obvious spin: a drug user with prior convictions and a history of running off pays for the hazards of her lifestyle.

Journalist Danny Sanchez doesn’t buy it. Teresa del Hoyo had been clean for over a year.

More importantly, she’d been looking into murky events dating back to the Spanish Civil War, and of her two partners in crime, one is missing and the other is dead.

A simple article about the murder of a young woman for the tabloids leads Danny to the morbid, heart-breaking stories of the niños robados por el franquismo, children reported dead to their Republican parents to be given to “approved” families during Franco’s reign.

Danny knows he’s struck something big as he tries to connect Teresa’s political activism and the Church’s interest in the case with her research into the history of Almería.

With every step bringing him closer to the truth, it becomes clearer that these 50-year-old secrets still hang over the town… and that someone would kill to keep them.

Free on Amazon UK today - The Allies by Maurice Sellars

Spoiler:
Belgium, 1944

Sergeant Wally Shaw has been on the run across the war-torn Belgium countryside for longer than he’d like.

Weary and disillusioned by the senseless risks of war, and unable to keep up the fight when everything he holds dear is gone, he deserted his platoon and is now a fugitive.

He makes his way by stealing supplies and selling them on the black market.

It’s not the most honourable way of life, but Shaw stopped caring about honour a long time ago.

Fleeing British MPs, he races across the Nazi-ravaged fields and plunges into hiding — only to find himself in the company of three Germans who, like Shaw, are deserters.

Forced by circumstance to trust each other, an uneasy alliance is formed that ultimately leads the four men to hatch an incredible, daring and impossible plot.

In a concentration camp in the heart of Germany, millions of pounds of perfect British banknotes are being printed — the forgery entirely undetectable, even by the experts at the Bank of England.

Their aim – to flood and destroy the British economy.

The allies’ plan is devastatingly simple – steal the counterfeit money from beneath the noses of the SS and retire to Sweden, free to live out the rest of their days in a life of luxury.

The plan may be simple, but there’s no denying the dangers involved.

No one walks willingly into a concentration camp, and even fewer walk out again alive.

Each man knows the risks facing them, but the reward is too great an opportunity to pass up.

And when you’re officially listed as dead, is there really anything left to lose?

D. A. Mishani

D. A. Mishani's Inspector Avi Avraham series is discounted in the UK and Europe:

1. The Missing File £0.99 / €0.99
2. A Possibility of Violence £1.99 / €1.99
3. The Man Who Wanted to Know £2.99 / €3.49 (Also discounted to $4.99 in New Zealand)

I read these recently and thought they were superb. They are police procedurals set in Israel.

(Edit: There is a "To be continued" at the end of the first book, but I don't think it is really warranted as the series follows the usual structure for the genre where the case being investigated is fully resolved by the end of each book, and only the part of the story relating to the personal lives of the investigators continues on. The name of one of the main characters is consistently misspelt in the third book, but otherwise the ebook production standard is good.)

Thanks - a new author for me, but worth a go at that price. Also discounted at Amazon.
