Since Mr. Wodehouse died in 1975, his works (all of them) will be public domain in most "western" countries in 1946 2046 (life+70), or in 1926 2026 in Canada (life+50). Until then, not a single one is public domain here. Last edited by Jellby; 02-02-2013 at 09:05 AM. |

All US works published prior to 1923 are also in the public domain in the UK, due to the "rule of the shorter term", but that only applies to works originally published in the US, hence the pre-1923 Wodehouse works which are in the public domain in the US, are still protected by copyright in the UK. Harry - just so I understand .... you are saying that Wodehouse books published before 1923 are still in copyright in the UK? And shouldn't be downloaded from PG (etc) by people in the UK?

I don't wish to start a debate about copyright, but I do find it crazy that something published as long ago as 1915 isn't in the public domain.
There's also something very morbid about checking an author's death and hoping that they lived a short life so that their works are out of copyright. I find myself thinking "Oh d*m*!" if an author hasn't died early enough. Gruesome. |

Mr Wodehouse wrote this book when he was a young man, and then lived to be a very old man. Hard to blame him for that .
It's not as if you can't buy it: eg Amazon UK have it here. Isn't this really just a case of wanting something for nothing? Last edited by HarryT; 02-05-2013 at 10:37 AM. |

Harry, I did take a look at Amazon earlier in the discussion re Wodehouse, and I was disgusted at the price they were asking for a book which should, imho, be in the public domain. I would have paid £2.50 or so, but £5.22 is just too much.
But this isn't the right place to discuss the pricing of books. Just pointing out that I'm not expecting something for nothing, but at a reasonable cost. |

Thanks I'll take a look at that. I'll check out some charity shops etc for cheap copies of the blandings novels. Thanks.
Just checked Abebooks. It's in US! The shipping would cost a fortune. Last edited by BookCat; 02-08-2013 at 06:15 AM. |
