"Flass-id" would be what I've heard most commonly, with occasionally "flak-id". |

I think the "flas-id" mentioned above is the same that you are calling "flass-id".

flas-id is the correct way to spell the pronunciation. The way you spelled it has an extra s. Flaks-id is almost correct. I made a typo and it's supposed to be flak-sid. Flak-id is incorrect.

I think he is saying he has heard a THIRD pronunciation, with no S sound in it at all.
And since language is fluid, and dictionaries report actual usage, not prescribed, mandated usage -- perhaps more pronunciations are in use in different areas. I suspect that conflicts with JSWolf's rigid beliefs, though, so he will not accept this. |

I doubt I'd have understood what the writer meant if flaksid was used, instead of flassid. I've never even heard of the pronounciation with the k in it...

I'd have been momentarily stummed to hear "flas-id" or "flass id". I've only heard it with the k!
Or perhaps I've mostly read it - not many people actually SAY that. |

Worst audiobook narration? I didn't care much for the reading of The Stand. It's pretty unfair since the reader's very accomplished in the field. More to do with that book being my #1 all time and sort of falls in the "untouchable" range more than his reading of it.
While we're on it, the BEST audiobook was just released. It is the complete reading of Sherlock Holmes read by "Mr. Global Treasure" himself...and I don't even own it yet (that's how good it is). Could be the only audiobook reading that surpasses his JKR's Harry Potter series. Stephen Fry is the only person I can think of than can take "untouchable" lit and make it all great. How lovely! They won't sell it to me. Guess my library won't have that particular version either, if Audible's the only source.

I was listening to Prunella Scales narrating Cranford when she pronounced Don Quixote as "Don Quicks-Oat". I was horrified for about 5 seconds until I realized it was the character that was supposed to be pronouncing it wrong.

If it wasn't for this thread, I would never have known it could be pronounced as flaksid. I've always heard it as flasid. If it was said as flaksid, I would have wonder what the heck is being said. That would bring me out of the book. Even though I now know flaksid can be correct, that would still spoil the book.
So when we see flaccid, do not use a k. |
