Less Amazon, KDP, and/or Look Inside discussion please and more Sigil. Sigil allows anyone to create epubs as semantically or unsemantically as they like. The reasons why anyone would lean toward one or the other when creating Kindlebooks is not--itself--relevant to Sigil.

Stop this. It's not relevant. You're talking apples (kindle devices/apps) and he's talking oranges (the Look Inside feature on Amazon's website). And none of it has a single thing to do with Sigil (banannas) - the epub editor - and its ability to create/generate/edit TOCs (the thread topic).

You don't. Which is why many people put the 'Cover' in their TOC
This thread just made me aware there was a (NCX) TOC edit. Using that to supplement the Tag Generated makes tasks getting around these manufacturer quirks easy |

I'm getting the distinct impression that there are many in that same boat.
It was added in the feature explosion of v0.7.0 (and is mentioned in the outdated documentation). In the name of thoroughness: the Generate TOC and the Edit TOC tools modify the NCX when editing EPUB2s, and modify the NAV document when editing EPUB3s. |

Because the NCX isn't required in an EPUB3 and the NAV document is. But because we think backward compatibility IS important, there's also an EPUB3-only tool to generate the NCX from the current NAV document.

I think ePub 3 that uses no features specific to ePub 3 (that cannot be done in ePub 2) should be made as ePub 2.

So how do you get a Kindle eBook to open at the cover? Truth is, where your ebook opens is entirely at the whim of Kindle's device software. So why worry about this -- You can't really control it. And I don't know why people always bleat and moan about this. You want to see the Cover, Title or Chapter 1 in your Kindle ebook -- then click on the Go To menu dropdown, click on Table of Contents and make your choice. Or just use the Device TOC. What's so hard about that? Last edited by slowsmile; 10-03-2016 at 07:43 AM. |
