And RJS doesn't seem to be much of a self-publishing type, so maybe he's waiting for another outfit to offer to distribute and promote his backlist the way that Open Road Media or Diversion Books do so he doesn't have to do it all himself. If you haven't read it before, it's a pretty decent story. Not one of his better ones, IMHO, but reasonably solid in concept and execution and worth a read if you like his stuff. |

Edit: Sawyer wrote on his web site that Starplex was exclusive to the Phoenix Pick bundle at the time, so I think it is exclusive again to this bundle. Last edited by Marrella; 03-30-2016 at 04:40 PM. |

All of Kathleen Rowntree's novels are free (DRM-free) at the moment
The Quiet War of Rebecca Sheldon Mr Brightly's Evening Off Brief Shining Between Friends Outside, Looking In An Innocent Diversion Tell Mrs Poole I'm Sorry Between Friends has most reviews This is a novel about love, loyalty and betrayal. Past experience leads Tessa Brierley to suspect that her husband Nick is, once again, having an affair. Her first instinct, as always, is to confide in her best friend Maddy. But a chance remark over mid-morning coffee reveals that Maddy is the latest 'other woman'. Tessa does not want to lose either husband or friend. Kathleen Rowntree is an English writer. When asked what her novels are about she usually replies with one word: 'relationships'. Her explorations of human foibles, schemes and tangles lead reviewers to use words like sharp, shrewd, witty, satirical, clever and hard-biting - as well as sympathetic, funny, warm, suspenseful and (fortunately) entertaining. http://www.amazon.com/s/?url=search-...hleen+Rowntree http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?url=searc...hleen+Rowntree http://www.amazon.ca/s/?url=search-a...hleen+Rowntree |

New Wildside Press freebie for Tuesday is up:
Prospector's Special by the late Robert Sheckley (ISFDB, Wikipedia), who was apparently named SFWA Author Emeritus at some point, a vintage science fiction adventure novelette set on Venus, originally published in Galaxy magazine in 1959. Lost in the vast Scorpion Desert of Venus, he neede all the courage a man could own -- and every bit of credit he could raise! A classic science fiction novelet originally published in 1959. Also, a reminder that StoryBundle's Weird Horror Bundle, containing works by Bram Stoker and World Fantasy Award winners and finalists expires in a couple more days, and their Aurora Award Bundle chock-full of actual finalist and winning works by Canadian authors for our top national sfnal writing prize will be available for the next two weeks. And Rev. Bob pointed out in the SF/Fantasy megathread that the Humble Comics Bundle Buffy, Angel & Spike from Dark Horse contains a number of the official post-series continuations of the TV shows with titles written by show creator Joss Whedon himself, and has comparatively little overlap with Dark Horse's own giant Buffy anniversary bundle which they offered a while ago, so it's probably well worth getting for fans (and will be valid for the next week). The Humble Bundle Aspen Comics expires tomorrow at 11 AM Pacific Time, if you're interested, and also expiring on Wednesday is the Groupees Archie Comics Bundle which mostly contains titles that weren't offered in the previous Archie Comics Humble Bundle (some of which are follow-ups to the storylines in those, like the Sonic the Hedgehog crossover thing). This includes issues in some kind of new reboot series, some of which are written by Mark Waid, whom I've generally found to be a fairly good and interesting writer who pays attention to character history and development while telling engaging stories. For tabletop RPG players, the Bundle of Holding people have a new offer for a retro sci-fi interplanetary game which they liken to Edgar Rice Burroughs, Leigh Brackett, and Flash Gordon, which is done by Cubicle 7 (makers of the tie-in RPG to Charles Stross' Laundry Files, which was a previous bundle offer which I bought and thought was very well done for the entertaining supplementary info, even if I don't game), if you're interested: Rocket Age Last edited by ATDrake; 04-05-2016 at 01:25 PM. |

New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:
Humble Book Bundle Sci-Fi Specials presented by WordFire Press, which is Kevin J. Anderson's indie publishing with occasional backlist imprint. It seems to have mainly newer authors I don't recognize, but there's a novel by Alan Dean Foster in the middle tier, and the main draw will probably be the set of 4 previously unpublished Frank Herbert novels at the top tier (not all of them sfnal; apparently there's a mainstream one about some sort of experience he had in Mexico and some adventure/espionage thrillers), and some sort of anthology of new and reprint stories by well-known sfnal writers. Price is fluctuating a lot this early in, but currently the average is under $7 (no extra books added next week, from the looks of it), top-tier is $15. Quote:

New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:
Humble Audiobook Bundle R. A. Salvatore's The Demon Wars Saga, featuring full cast audio readings with cinematic music of an old Del Rey-published fantasy series (Wikipedia) by the popular Forgotten Realms franchise tie-in author (ISFDB, Wikipedia). These seem to be an original work of his, and not a tie-in to anything else. Price is currently fluctuating a lot, but right now it's under $7 for the average tier (no extra books next week), and $15 for the top-tier, which also includes a new ebook novella which apparently introduces an upcoming new novel in the revived series. ETA: going by the ISFDB listings, it looks like you get the original 7 novels from the late 90s/early 00s, plus the 1st of the prequel novels written later. Quote:
StoryBundle also has a new indie fantasy bundle: The Self-Published Fantasy Blog-off Bundle, details in Dr. Drib's dedicated thread here, where apparently one of the top tier books is a glitch freebie. For tabletop RPG gamers, the Bundle of Holding people have added a new fantasy game bundle: Dungeon Crawlers which seems to have been some sort of vintage D&D thing. Their retro Golden Age-styled sci-fi adventure bundle is still available for a few more days: Rocket Age Last edited by ATDrake; 04-13-2016 at 02:26 PM. |

New freebie from Wildside Press for this Tuesday:
The Fantômas Megapack® by the late Pierre Souvestre (Wikipedia) and the late Marcel Allain (Wikipedia), containing the first 5 novels about their titular French cult-hit master criminal (Wikipedia). Fun fact: the X-Men comics character Fantomex was named for him. The Fantômas books, created and written by Pierre Souvestre and Marcel Allain, form one of the longest-running and most famous crime series in France. Fantômas first appeared in 1911 and was featured in a total of 32 volumes written by the two collaborators, then a subsequent 11 volumes written by Allain alone after Souvestre’s death. The character was also the basis of various film, television, and comic book adaptations. In the history of crime fiction, he represents a transition from Gothic novel villains of the 19th century to modern-day serial killers. A reminder that the Humble Audiobook Bundle R. A. Salvatore's Demon Wars Saga, containing dramatized full-cast audiobook adaptations of the popular Forgotten Realms tie-in novelist's original fantasy series, plus a new e-book novella, expires tomorrow on Wednesday at 11 AM Pacific Time. Also, StoryBundle's Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off Bundle is still good for the next week, although apparently several of the books are regularly offered free or at discount sale prices. Bundle of Holding are repeating their popular Torg bundle of sf/fantasy RPG guidebooks from the popular 1990s game which seems to be set on an alternate history Earth, as well as adding a 2nd Torg bundle with additional content, and also offering something called Mongoose Traveller which appears to be a far future science fiction RPG, if you're interested. New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:
Humble Book Bundle Hacking presented by No Starch Press, featuring a lot of DIY programming and computer/internet-related non-fiction, including Bitcoin, privacy, malware, and security issues, and how to fend off a zombie apocalypse with the aid of Arduino and Raspberry Pi. Two of the books in the basic level, the Linux and Python guides, have been previously offered in other NSP HBs, but all the rest looks new. Currently it's still around the opening price of $9 (no additional books added next week), but NSP bundles have been very popular in the past and only went up instead of down, though the average never beat the top tier of $15. Quote:
StoryBundle also has a new offering of mixed fiction and non-: The Boss Fight Bundle which apparently has to do with video gaming, and includes stories, essays, and guides in various popular game settings such as Metal Gear Solid and Bible Adventures, etc., as well as substantial-looking behind-the-scenes making of + interviews. $5 minimum gets you 5 titles devoted to each of their respective games, $15 top-tier gets you another 5 titles + 1 anthology. New Wildside Press freebie for this Tuesday:
The Jungle Minipack™ by Arthur O. Friel (Wikipedia), Douglas M. Dold, and Carl Jacobi (Wikipedia), containing vintage jungle/adventure-themed pulp stories. Everyone loves jungle stories, from Tarzan to Jan of the Jungle. Here is your chance to try the vine-ridden work of 3 top pulp writers, with a sampler taken from the (MUCH longer) The Jungle Story MEGAPACK®. Arthur O. Friel is a personal favorite of mine. He was not only a pulp writer, but a real Amazon explorer, which gives he work a flavor and realism not found in most other jungle-story authors. If you like his work, check out some of his other books we’ve published. I’m sure you’ll like them. I don’t know much about Douglas M. Dold beyond the fact that he was a general fiction writer and appeared in quite a few magazines in the first three decades of the 20th century. He racked up quite a few appearances in adventure, detective, fantasy, horror, and western pulps. Carl Jacobi was a Weird Tales author and is justly famous for his fantasy and horror. But he dabbled in other genres (and also mixed them)—as you’ll find in his story here. We have published Jacobi in our Golden Age of Science Fiction MEGAPACK® series (volume 10). Enjoy! Bundle of Holding has added a new RPG offering set in a superhero dystopia in 1999, Brave New World, and their two Torg fantasy RPG bundles expire soon. Also expiring soon, Humble Comics Bundle My Little Pony 2 presented by IDW and StoryBundle's The Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off Bundle. |

New StoryBundle is up, and it's for:
The Nerd History Bundle, featuring mostly non-fiction histories and biographies about computing, plus a fiction anthology of stories about computing pioneers like Ada Lovelace. This has a mix of what looks like newly-written and backlist books, including a 1993 Bill Gates biography which received praise from assorted newspaper sources at the time, as well as several more obscure old-school computing things, like a history of the TRS-80 computer, which is favourably reviewed on this enthusiast website here. $3 minimum gets you 3 titles: the TRS-80 history book, a memoir by a Microsoft guy who used to be a major player in their Xbox division, and the fiction anthology. $12 top-tier gets an additional 4 titles: the Bill Gates biography, a memoir by a long-time tech journalist, a history/biographical overview of important Silicon Valley computing personalities, and a management consultant's view of Google. Also, Humble Bundle has the new Humble Manga Bundle KC Kodansha Comics out, details in the Comics megathread, and offers a freebie sampler download of an "Eye Candy Flavor Pack" full of concept artwork and character design images from the games featured in their current Humble Eye Candy Bundle, if you're interested. Last week's Humble Book Bundle Hacking presented by No Starch Press is also still available. Last edited by ATDrake; 05-04-2016 at 02:45 PM. |
