Manufacturing costs are just the start. Support costs have to be factored in also—lots of issues come up with removable storage.
I expect another reason is that they want to leave an option to add essentially identical models in the future with different memory specs to achieve different price points and profit margins, like Apple does with iPod Touch. But they want to sell the #*$& out of this one first. |

You can get an external battery pack for long trips.
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...y+pack&x=0&y=0 We use one for our portable DVD player to amuse my grandson on long trips and it works great. Most of the time it sits in a drawer, but we do use it a few times a year and those times make it well worth the price and trouble to carry an extra device. |

Yep. Not worried at all. I'll use it mostly around the house or occasionally out and about.
My Xoom works fine and have never so far run out of batter while out and about. I generally leave the charger at home. given that I can charge it from USB (unlike the Xoom), I'm even less concerned. |

It'll be a problem for me, because I'd use it the same way I use my iPod touch - streaming, videos, audiobooks, games. I'm currently using 12GB on my touch.

I don't have any MP3s loaded on my iPod touch or my Nook Color. When I want to listen to music on those devices, I stream it off of internet radio. I keep my MP3s loaded on my Sansa Clip+.

Just got off a chat with Kindle customer service. Obviously this battery won't be user-replaceable. But they also have not yet set a price/policy on changing batteries when they need it.
Much like Barnes and Noble who still hasn't set that policy (though at least batteries can be had through 3rd parties and replacement is not supposed to be too difficult). I know these batteries last for a few years, but I am always taken aback that the assumption is you will just replace the device. I realize Amazon isn't going anywhere, but still this irks me. |

at $200 it is certainly priced right.
When I clicked through, I was offered an Amazon Visa card and $50 off, so I paid only $149 for mine. |
