You do not need a VL to find James Patterson (or any other)
Learn to use the tag browser (luggage tag icon to open) That can do simple and medium level searches with just clicks and the control key |

If you remove all the formats, you'll have basically deleted your books. Only metadata remains, not the files. A book must have a format for you to be able to read it.

You can remove the other formats the same way. For now, I would suggest getting rid the original_???? formats which are leftovers from various calibre tools.
The easiest way to do this would be to select all your ePub books using the formats:EPUB search, and in Remove files of a specific format from books, select the original_???? formats and click OK. |

When I am backing up the Calibre books now there are files that say mobi caltrash. Lots of them.
Do they eventually go, or do I have to do something? This is all new to me. |

See item 7 in the drop down menu ==>> Calibre User Manual - Remove books -> Restore recently deleted - you control retention period etc from there.

The default is that the deleted books/formats disappear (are permanently deleted) after 2 weeks. You can change that default in the dialog that @BetterRed referred to.

Would you leave the other formats in my list and not delete any of them? |

Yes. The time is checked when calibre is closed, so when you stop calibre any deleted format older than that will be permanently removed.

That said, in your case I would consider deleting the "ORIGINAL_..." formats. They don't serve much purpose once you are happy with a conversion. |

NOT FROM A BACKUP. The whole purpose of a Backup is a frozen view in time.
