Hi, I'm hoping you can help. I've been using Mass Search/Replace without issue, but today, after working fine for a while, I tried to run it through an action chain and I got an error: TypeError:Invalide Column metadata. Now whenever I try to run anything, or even customise the plugin, I always get this error.

I hadn't changed any columns since my last successful run, so all I can think of is that Action Chains has somehow broken it. I have tried restarting Calibre and restarting my PC. This is what I get from the details of the error:

I think it may be to do with the Annotations plugin. I used it yesterday, although I'm 99% sure I ran Mass Search/Replace fine after I did that, until I tried to run it through an Action Chain.

Anyway, here's the log. Let me know if you need anything else and thank you for looking into it for me, it's much appreciated.

Hi un_pogaz, I would but I tried using Fetch Annotations (experimental) to see if it was an alternative to the Annotations plugin and ended up having to restore my Calibre from a backup because it froze Calibre and proceded to keep refreezing Calibre every time I connected my Kobo... The upside is I backup frequently so I only lost 1 day's worth of edits and now Mass Search/Replace is back to working like it did - in hindsight, that should have been my first port of call, rather than bothering you!

However, I am now 100% sure it was Annotations causing issues. The first import of backup data failed due to the Annotations plugin (worrying for a second because calibre reverted to basics with no plugins, even on my previous library, but it was fixed by importing my backup a second time). I tested restoring a second time with the same results. Therefore, I've deleted Annotations as it's clearly causing errors across Calibre and (due to sad circumstances) it's no longer in development. KoboUtilities has a manual copy of annotations, which isn't as quick/automated, but gets the job done.

Can you tell if it's possible to use the Mass Search/Replace plugin to Search&Replace the body of books' text?

Such as replacing "labour" with "labor" across all books in a library. Or, as another example, I read a lot of books from Chinese sources and there are multiple technically correct translations of the same character's name, I would like to make all books spell it the same way.

I already replaced all I need in metadata, but I'm having trouble doing it in the books' text itself.

I can do that with Calibre's native Search&Replace, but it works one book at a time and I might need tens or hundreds of books edited at once, so doing it that way would be pretty time-consuming.

Editor Chains plugin can do to search&replace inside an epub/azw3 book. Used in conjunction with Action Chains plugin, you can perform search&replace on multiple books on your calibre library. Refer to the docs of the plugins.

Edit:

Attached to this post is a chain that replaces labour/labor on selected books in your library. You can modify the search as you like, or add additional search/replace as follows:

Make sure you have both plugins installed: Action Chains and Editor Chains.
In your calibre library go to : Action Chains > Add/modify chains > right click on table > import chain > import the attached zip file.
Now you should have chain called "Search & Replace epubs". You can modify the chain to add more actions if you want.
Once you are done, you will have a menu entry under "Action Chains" icon for your newly created chain. You can use it to search/replace selected books in your library.

No, Mass Search/Replace only work on the library metadata, not the book content text.

The solution presented by capink is great. It requires a bit of setup, but it's the better posible.

This is exactly what I needed, thank you so much!

Especially big thank you for including the labour/labor chain file, the example really helped me understand how to use the plugin. Going through documentation is hard for me, I'm not confident I'd manage to do set things up without help. Thank you for taking the time to do it.

The upside is I backup frequently so I only lost 1 day's worth of edits and now Mass Search/Replace is back to working like it did - in hindsight, that should have been my first port of call, rather than bothering you! However, I am now 100% sure it was Annotations causing issues. The first import of backup data failed due to the Annotations plugin (worrying for a second because calibre reverted to basics with no plugins, even on my previous library, but it was fixed by importing my backup a second time). I tested restoring a second time with the same results. Therefore, I've deleted Annotations as it's clearly causing errors across Calibre and (due to sad circumstances) it's no longer in development. KoboUtilities has a manual copy of annotations, which isn't as quick/automated, but gets the job done.

Such as replacing "labour" with "labor" across all books in a library. Or, as another example, I read a lot of books from Chinese sources and there are multiple technically correct translations of the same character's name, I would like to make all books spell it the same way. I already replaced all I need in metadata, but I'm having trouble doing it in the books' text itself. I can do that with Calibre's native Search&Replace, but it works one book at a time and I might need tens or hundreds of books edited at once, so doing it that way would be pretty time-consuming.
