Amazon also frequently updates their software to defeat DRM removal, which is a necessity if you want to keep control of your library (I have many books that I purchased in formats that are no longer viable and I REFUSE to just buy them again because someone decided to make changes to MY books)
I've had a couple of Kobos and I don't find them buggy - again, YMMV. But the bottom line for me is, don't let anyone lock you into anything where your books and your devices are concerned. Kobo all the way (and they have a good variety of devices, so you should have no trouble finding one that suits you) |

That's why I have settled with PocketBook. I'm in Europe and this is an EU brand so maybe this is an advantage.

I'd maybe buy a Pocketbook if Kobo didn't exist. |

You're right and yes, they are very connected to the EU.

Frankly I don't know what I'd buy if Kobo suddenly stopped making ereaders. The Pocketbook UI is not good enough for me, the same for Kindles and Nooks. Still, KOReader on a Pocketbook would probably be the next best thing, although KOReader has its own issues, so that would also be less than ideal.
My Kobos have spoiled me. Now everything else feels unsatisfying in comparison. |

And their newest readers don't use the latest Carta technology, so their screens are worse. |

I like PB UI and yes, maybe they are slow (I'm not sure as I haven't tried any other brand), but I find it not annoying so I ordered another PB device. Era will join my InkPad 4. I like reading on it and that is the point. I also like the send-by-email feature (so I can send ebooks via email from my Calibre). Also, the PB Cloud is nice to sync between devices.

As far as I can see how it goes with these e-book readers, it is mostly a matter of personal preferences. I think each of us has its own best brand.
For my (our) second e-reader I weighted between Kobo Libra 2 and PocketBook Era, but since I already own PB InkPad 4 I am familiar with the software and it is enjoyable enough for me. I decided to go with the Era because it is a familiar UI and system. I think syncing will be much easier if I have same brands. |

That said, I can read on any of them. I use the same font on all of my own books, so the Nook using "Publisher's Font" along with the others where I sideload the font to the device) can use Constantia, so the pages look pretty much the same. Since I don't normally use KePub, the page numbers are the same even on the Kobo, so I can sync simply by going to the page number I left off on — on any ePub reader. I don't consider my PocketBook slow, but I don't do a lot of organizing with Calibre — just mostly read. |
