While I live alone and there's no one to nag me for leaving the lid open, I always keep it closed. My blind cat would fall in otherwise (he likes to climb on the toilet to indicate he wants to drink, whereupon I must offer him water from a cup. Yes, of course there are drinking bowls in the apartment - two of them and I change the water daily or even twice a day. No, he can't be bothered to drink from a bowl when I'm there to personally serve him).
