Did I win?
Well, you get a kiss back for consolation. You went very very close with Tolstoy. How smart you are, individually, just yourself, by all means. My second example is about the first chapters of the 3rd book of Anna Karenina. Where he goes and works in the country with his peasants. This to me is one of the best things ever written.

The first one is not Gibbon, who makes a fantastic reading anyway. No it's something much older and very actual. Our common friend Ea would certainly like it. Hopefully.

Now Im intrigued... Unfortunately I have no good guesses. The kind of "old stuff" i know best is ancient norse not ancient mediterrainean (edit : obviously i cant make this assumption)

I am reading a classic at the moment though; Mastering the art of french cooking. Im in the middle of vol one and its a nice wellpaced narrative with exciting moments

(sorry abt typos - the ipod touch interface and spellchecker is fecking inefficient and annoying)

Hi, heroic Norse woman!

Do you just just read (meaning looking at the pictures) about the art of French cooking or you carry on all the assignments?

The "old stuff" I am thinking about is translated in English and we have it on MR. And it is much easier to read than the ancient Greek stuff you were promoting before. Let me give you an excerpt.

... Emulation is pain caused by seeing the presence, in persons whose nature is like our own, of good things that are highly valued and are possible for ourselves to acquire; but it is felt not because others have these goods, but because we have not got them ourselves. It is therefore a good feeling felt by good persons, whereas envy is a bad feeling felt by bad persons ...

and it goes on and on like that. A river of gold.

Would anything from Jules Verne be considered a classic? I wouldn't mind reading something from him as my next book. And I know several of his books is available here at MR.

Aristotle's Rhetoric is not unduly long. Why not nominate the whole book?

Why not the entire book? It's not that long.

An other one! Yuppee! No it's obnoxious unless you are a lawyer. In which case I take back all my kisses.

P.S. The system told me to spread around before ... Too bad
