Apple may well take back the lead this quarter with the bump that the iPhone 5 release gives them, but I think Samsung could maintain a longer-term lead. They have high-end phones that are comparable to Apple's, and also have products that cover a lot of market segments that Apple don't.
Interesting that Apple are now keeping three different generations of the iPhones on sale, to offer some cheaper options. [Or have they done that for a while? I don't follow phone stuff] Last edited by murraypaul; 09-13-2012 at 04:52 PM. |

They always discounted the previous generation, but I don't know if they also discounted the 2 generations old one. |

Also, the irony of calling Apple—which has one phone— a jack of all trades, in comparison to a company which—as you point out—is trying to appeal to every demographic, was hopefully lost on no one. Last edited by holymadness; 09-13-2012 at 07:06 PM. |

What Apple needs to do is come out with a new model that is better enough to the previous model so it's worth upgrading to. Not two years down the line. If you have an iPhone 4s, it's not worth upgrading to an iPhone 5. Nor was the iPad 2 a worthy upgrade from the iPad.
Sure, the iPhone 5 is a good upgrade if you are going from an iPhone 3Gs or lower. But if you have a 4s, not worth it and if you have a 4, maybe, maybe not. |

So, what we can all take away from Apple's latest product introduction snooze fest (boy, do they need another SJ to better present their stuff -- they should be able to afford to hire a decent speaker?) is that they blatantly copied and ripped off old designs --- their own.
And yes, Apple didn't innovate quite enough to start copying the latest superior Samsung and Nokia offerings... So is there anyone out there who still believes that Apple's best days are not behind them? After all, who cares about a company's past, the future is all that matters. The iPod line is a different story. Apple went from something good to something not so good and the best iPod Apple has even made was the 4th gen iPod. It is without a doubt the bet sounding iPod. |

If not, then why do you need a revolutionary phone update every year? You're disappointed that you don't have to spend $600 on a new phone every 12 months? Incomprehensible. That hype train just keeps on chugging. |

one of the reasons why i don't really update my devices is because i don't know what to do with the old one. and until then, i don't buy anything new. |

Nice thing about having an iPhone is that its resale value is so high. Market value for an iPhone 4 on Craigslist? $390. For a Samsung Galaxy S? $200. Last edited by holymadness; 09-13-2012 at 08:34 PM. |

i've been reading a lot of verge articles in the past, and they seem very biased to me. though in fairness, lots of tech sites are anyway.
