After poking around the forums a bit, I found out I needed to download the binary to get the latest version installed on Ubuntu. 0.6.39 does detect the 770 properly, so there's one.

This is the report from a different win 7 machine. Looks like it did detect a mountable drive, so I guess it is something on my computer.

RESOLVED - finally figured this out. I was running a custom version of the N770 OS. Reverted to stock, and Calibre now detects my 770 again. It didn't occur to me to check this because the old detection method didn't have a problem with the "hacked" OS. Just FYI in case someone else has this issue.

You also might want to consider updating your detection signatures to allow detection of the OS, or have them detect based purely on the hardware id, if that's possible.

Another idea I had was maybe you could make an option to tell calibre an arbitrary mounted drive is a reading device, and tell it where you want it to sync your books.

Anyway, thanks for your help on this.

I believe that a facility of this type is in the current Calibre beta release, so at some point it should make the main release.

Detection is based on hardware id, to be precise usb vendor, product and bcd ids. Your custom OS presumably changed those.

That image shows the disk mounted as a local disc, not a removable disk. Calibre looks only at removable discs. My guess, based on almost no evidence, is that the device is not really a USB disc, and that Nokia has for some reason written its drivers to connect as local.

(Edit: I should have read ahead. Didn't see the last three posts. Sigh.)
