Still, the book has 87 chapters and is 1.5mb in size. I can't believe the author kept it as a monolithic block while he wrote it. So, I'd at least expect some number of files (besides one).

Backs my theory that it was an HTML export from Word, which I think does indeed work better with Mobipocket creator than a direct Word import (which may be using MS Office Word to HTML anyway?).

I used Mobipocket creator on XP with Word 2002/XP (and doc from Open Office) before discovering Calibre and upgrading to LibreOffice.

With outlining built into Word, OO and LO Writer for over 20 years why wouldn't an author use a single file? I see separate plain text files used at an early stage of writing where the structure isn't clear and bits are written on a phone.

I think the tool used to make this book was whoever it was that created the eBook.

My $.02, FWIW, is that it's naught more than a Word file.

Someone, somewhere, created a template that they use, possibly in Sigil or Calibre, for eBooks imported "from" Word (Word--save as filtered HTML-->Sigil/Calibre).

I mean, the CSS for one thing SCREAMS Word. The MSO-styles, ditto. The margins in pts, yet more bettah ditto.

That's Word and somebody, somewhere, for some reason, created it to use repeatedly. Not surprising if they have a process that suits them. They probably get the manuscript from writer A, copy-paste it into Template file Z and then save, export, clean the HTML (as much as is being done--not a ton, from what I see here) and import to the aforementioned Sigil/Calibre.

(Or, they give it to their authors, if they are a publisher and insist that they use it, like the Amazon "Word templates" that they give out.)

I agree, it gives me flashbacks to my very early days with MobiPocketCreator. I remember the first time I "saw" it, that feeling that "HOLY S**T! I understand what's happening here!" and managed to somehow make an eBook (a MOBI) from a Word file. LOLOLOLOL.

I edited the HTML from Word in Notepad++ after my first couple of attempts with Word XP -> HTML -> Mobipocket Creator.

Seriously long ago.

Yeah, me too. (Notepad, then, didn't even HAVE ++ at the time. My go-to now is NoteTAB Pro, but SSDD.)

But I do, truly, remember that moment, when I thought 'holy crap, I actually understand what's happening here!"

LOLOLOLOLOLOL. Ah, the good ol' days. Now, with all the platforms, devices, altered and revised "formats" and readers...I spend half the time thinking "Holy crap, I don't actually understand what's happening here!"

Oh, I suspect that's true for a huge number of us. I know it was for me, hot on the heels of the (gasp!) IBM OS/6. Yowzers, am I dating myself, or what?

I tried using Wordperfect to create my first web page (from the source WPF). My target uses were on Dialup with a 4:3 monitor

I remember OS/6. All those 3.5" disks.

Where I worked back then, they were using Wang Word Processor with Wang PCs and a server. They wanted to switch to something else and because some of the Wang PCs has an IBM compatible board in them, they were able to run MS-DOS. I suggested WordPerfect and it was accepted. So that was how I got into using WordPerfect.
