There is one program I know of that needs Kobo Desktop. That would be Obok.

I believe if you have downloaded the book (including DRM) directly to your Kobo device from the Kobo servers, the Obok plugin will read the books from your device if it is connected to calibre via USB.

Yep. Purchase book(s), download to ereader, connect ereader to computer. Fire up Calibre, press the Obok button and any purchased books are added to your library. Disconnect ereader and archive the originals and you’re done.
