There's room to make devices that otherwise wouldn't get made.
For instance, most Triton eInk readers are underpowered. I'd get one that's like the Paperwhite or the Aura H2O. So maybe an Ara phone with a Triton screen could have a week's battery life and be easy on the eyes. It could work. |

I hope Google succeeds with this they are targeting smartphones first but if this works I see a future where other devices like Tablets, Smart Tvs, Media Box/Streamers and cars etc adopting this. Home PC are supposedly modular but in reality they are not where you need some tech knowledge to change or upgrade its parts.

I agree entirely. There's already been discussion where some ara modules might work with a 3rd party modular smartwatch. Not that I'm into smartwatches, but it bodes well that they're watching for opportunities and aren't too possessive of the ecosystem.
Even without them providing certain form factors, you can still imagine how a large ara endoskeleton could make a very serviceable set top box, a la android tv/ouya/roku, with the right modules. I like to imagine someone builds a front module that isn't a screen, but rather IR, usb, hdmi and sd ports. Build it just how you like and get access to the main android market (so you don't have to wait for x, y and z apps to make their way to a segmented android tv market). A growing number of games come with controller support and would work well on such a device. 3rd party launchers could give you the interface of your choice. And if you bust your vital smartphone, you can canabalize parts from entertainment devices like set top boxes, tablets and smart fridges to tide you over until you can get new modules in the mail. |
