Wonder if B&N had some Nook tie up planned with the rumoured Surface Mini? When that didn't materialize they Went with Samsung out of desperation perhaps?

Kinda going backwards on screen resolution when compared to the current Nook HD (216 ppi vs 243 ppi).

Yes, I find the 7 and 8 inchers from Samsung rather underwhelming, with the exception of the Pro which comes with a 2560x1600px display, but that has a much higher price. There no excuse for not offering full HD on those tablets.

It's a shame B&N is getting out of the hardware end. I have a Nook HD+ and really like it. I think it was a really good deal for $149. The first thing I did when I got it was install the Kindle app (the Nook tablet have had full Google Play access for a while now). If you don't like the Nook version of Android you can always make a micro-SD card that will let you boot to stock Android. I gave away my 1st Gen Kindle Fire, I'll never buy another Amazon tablet until they remove the Amazon App store lock-in, it's too much of a pain to sideload apps.

More's the pity. I'd hoped the screen resolution on the new, hybrid device would at least equal that of the NOOK HD, making it an attractive next ereader/tablet should my NOOK HD ever get lost, stolen, or damaged. Now, my reaction is, "Meh."

It's classic product differentiation from the TV world: multiple product lines arranged as good, better, best for each screen size. Generally the entry level gets slightly older tech--the minimum needed to be respectable--and the top of the line gets the newest and greatest. There probably will also be a Galaxy Tab 4 Nook at 10in; the contract allows for it. |

I looked hard at the Nook HD+, but the nonstandard connector made it a non-starter. I ended up getting a Nexus 10 on sale instead, and couldn't be happier with it. Of course, it cost me $299. |

(parallel discussion ongoing on B&N forums)
I'm hoping whatever software bundle winds up on the co-branded device will make its way into Samsung's "perks" offerings for new Samsung device buyers. Being able to install the "NOOK Library" or whatever it's called onto my Note with the nice hi-res screen would be nice, especially if some B&N credit were included. A "NOOK: Goes great with Samsung! Samsung: Goes great with NOOK!" relationship would be nice. |

I find this interesting, but I have looked at a few Galaxy Tab's and they didn't wow me. I preferred my Nook Tablet or Nook HD. I think the build quality of the Nook was a bit better. Not to say Samsung made a shoddy product, just felt a little "less" to me. The only thing I never liked with the Nook HD was the connection/power port. At least with the NT you could charge it from any USB source (might be slow if you use a standard micro USB cable but it DID work. I think they got a lot of problems/flack for using a "looks like a USB port but not quite?" So many people are easily confused. So this time they decided to make it a full oddball connector so people couldn't be confused and cut down on their support calls. Of course that removes the ability I liked.
Are Samsung's easy to root? Or can you side load out of the box? As I said never had one for that long. If so, it should be interesting to see what changes B&N will make to the firmware. Still it is sad to see them get out of the hardware aspect. Also I doubt there will be another e-ink device from them. Personally I think their Nook Glowlight is a step backwards with its lack of a SD slot. I might pick up one of the older models, I had hoped their next model would fix that issue. But I guess not. |

I have nook hd+. 9" and 1920x1200. SD slot. A nice android tablet once I load kit kat on it. A little slow and mediocre battery life, but for the price I paid, it's hard to beat. The screen is very good and it's pretty light and comfortable to hold. This Samsung thing looks like a lousy deal by comparison.
It is sad, but I think nook's window has closed. Their survival is questionable. |

I really like the looks of the new Galaxy Tab S 10.5, but there's no way I'm paying $500 for a tablet. Hopefully by the time my HD+ dies, the price of the Samsung will come way down. After having a 9" tablet, I don't want to go smaller. I like to read magazines on my HD+ and even with a 9" screen, the print is tiny in some publications.

Or, you could be one refurbished by Samsung!
