This right after their release of a vanity self-publisher? What the hell are those executives thinking?

Penguin is using the agency model to force people to pay very high prices for their e-books (the new John Sandford novel is $19.99). Too many people are probably using the libary instead of buying those expensive e-books.

If Amazon/Mobi is the largest US ebook reader in sales...imagine the horror of Pub Execs when the people who normally would 1-click purchase a new release converted to use of the library system. I'm sure that if we looked a new ebook sales data compared to the date Kindle became available for libraries we would see signs of teeth-gnashing. |

As in the article, I do think that Penguin owes money to a lot of libraries that bought extra copies due to Kindle borrowing. It's unfair that they bought these copies now to no longer have them when they could have bought other eBooks instead. |

Lets say you own a Kindle and a Sony. You bought two eBooks. One in ePub and one in AZW. You have the Kindle, someone else in the house has the Sony. You go to read the Kindle version only to find you now have two ePub copies. I would think you'd want your money back for one of those copies. I know I would. Well, that explains why my hold on the new Cornwell book went missing
I just checked the publisher on the new Scarpetta book that's coming out on Dec 6th, and it's a division of Penguin. The Philly library was taking pre-release holds on the ePub version early last week, and now it's gone.

This does make my not spending $35.00 for a Philly library card, bittersweet. I would probably be all sorts of upset right now.

It's $14.99 on Amazon. (Not to say that your underlying point may not be correct, of course).

Amazon and Penguin have a beef going on and the rest of us (non-Kindle users) get caught in the crossfire.
So why is it when anything goes wrong with eBooks, Amazon is right there in the middle of it? |

The best way to fight the publishers is a boycott. But few want to do it. People have their favorite authors and won't let anything get in the way of reading them. They'll grumble about higher ebook pricing or lack of availability in libraries; and then turn around and buy it anyway.
