I check with amazon first & then shop around in the specialty stores.

I don't even know which stores are specialty, so I guess I hit the megastores.

Amazon, then B&N, then Books-A-Million.

as a former seller of specialty research and reference books I know it's very often the case that the small seller who is on top of the game will have the hard to find title in stock and I can walk out the door with it. However, when time is a factor or I am not able to make a special trip to that store, Amazon, B&N or sites specific to a given publisher will be my choice thanks to almost instant shipping and overnight service.
So basically my first thought is always the dedicated specialty retailer but I find I am often in a situation where buying online is a better option. Now if those small sellers could offer similar service levels for shipping without killing me on that shipping I would be willing to spend 20% more for a given title...at the prices I spend every year on references and since it's deductible or expansible to the job/client I flat don't care much about price. |
