I'm a woman and would rather have an iPad-sized Android tablet. Or a Windows tablet but that never seemed to pan out or be available as widely as the Android ones are.

In the NC video referenced above, not only is it narrated by a woman, but every single person using the device was a woman!
Its like its marketed as a woman's only device. That said, I'm looking to buy the missus a NC- if only to stop the flow of magazines into the house. |

I'm a woman, and Nook Color did NOT really appeal to me from the get go. My eyes don't prefer a backlit screen, and realistically, it didn't bring anything I really wanted to the table other than full touchscreen. I don't read magazines often, I rarely need color, there's NOT WiFi all over my small rural town, so it really wouldn't serve as access to the internet while going about my day. Battery life worse than the original Nook, which was disappointing at best in that regard. Price, expensive.
I just need is a reader that is easy to read on and that offers great organization for tons of books. I opted for the Sony 950... and hubby found me a clearance sale one for $200, so it even cost less! Things that were important to *me*... one library. Organization that is tied to my computer (Calibre tags), rather than some shelf system that will disappear if you switch devices or have to de-register a device. If I decide I do want a tablet, I want a full tablet. And, I'm more than happy to wait for the market to be full of devices to choose from and prices to come down. |

Well I'm a woman, and I bought my NC for many of the reasons stated in the article. I don't think it's sexist or silly if they're pointing out that women in fact read more magazines than men, and wanted a device that's more dedicated towards that.

If I was going for the color thing (I have an eInk reader because I get tremendous head aches if I read a backlit screen too long, like a computer), I'd get a Nook Color. And I'm a woman.
But I'm not really in the market for tablets at the moment. I'm still attached to keyboards. |

Except I like classical music (among others). And I don't much like beer. And I don't much like football. And I'm pretty tidy. And I like Celine Dione. And I don't know a lot about fixing cars. But I am manly, I swear ! I have chest hair ! Anyway, to get back on topic the Nook Color is probably my second favourite candidate for my next e-reader, while I wouldn't touch a Kindle with a stick (yuck !). |

A real guy geek likes gadgets that can do lots of cool stuff, not gadgets that look cool and thin and glitzy. That's for those metrosexual guys ! ![]() An Eee PC beats an iCrapad hands down ! And finally, tablets (and netbooks) and e-readers are two different categories of devices, so how can you compare them ? It's like comparing cars and trucks, or cars and boats ! I don't think the author was saying women are too stupid for multi-purpose devices in that section, I think he wanted to say women want it to do one thing well (read) and guys want lots of functions. Which is kind of a stupid generalization again (I want both !) but not sexist. But I think articles of this kind are the wrong place to look for intelligent comments.

The article seems to overstate the case based on its own numbers:
Quote:
I'm actually not a huge magazine reader, but the promise of magazines was about the only thing that made me look twice at the iPad, though the second look revealed that the implementation and business model were rather crap (no surprise to anyone familiar with iTunes). Magazines are one of the few areas where it does make sense to compare the iPad and NC head-to-head. A lot of people looked at the iPad and asked, among other things, "Will this be a satisfying replacement for the piles of woodpulp delivered monthly to my house?" and answered, "No," because it was too bulky, because the selection was too poor, and/or because they were uncertain what the iTunes version of their favorite magazines would look like. Those same people look at the NC, ask the same question, and say, "Yes." |

Maybe the preponderance of female Nookers is simply due to B&N's marketing. |

I wonder how I fit into the study: I have ovaries and I bought the NC for magazines and cookbooks and manga reading, and then I rooted that sucker so I could load all my Android toys on it.
I don't own an iPad because it's expensive and I prefer the Android OS, not to mention I've already got paid apps in the Google Market that I don't see a need to re-buy. As far as the "woman want to do one thing, men want to do many things" nonsense, of all the people I see say they don't want to run CM7 on their NC because all the games distract them from reading, they usually seem to be MALE commenters. Including my husband, come to think on it - I set him up with CM7 and he still prefers the stock reader because he "only wants to read" on the NC. Anecdata, I know, but all that to say, What a silly article. |
