Not I, but it's good advice nonetheless. Doing a soft reset certainly "stops" the CPU and hence the power consumption.

Reset is like yanking the power cord - no chance for Reader to save anything. When it goes into the "USB Mode", it saves bookmarks and last read info.

That may have been me that suggested soft resetting ... I know I've thought about it, but I'm not sure I actually said anything here.
Anyway, as igorsk points out, it would be best to let the Reader talk to ConnSoft just before you soft reset it for storage, so that it saves the bookmarks and such-like. If anyone decides to try this (maybe HarryT can, now that he's an e-ink bigamist ) I'd very much like to know if it keeps the battery from discharging -- I'd try it myself, but if I put mine down for a solid week I'd get the DTs. |

Perhaps one of the people doing firmware work will give my suggestion a go and we'll find this in a new revision. Better yet, since Sony has been notorious for watching and implementing home brew suggestions into its other platform (you know, the PSP), perhaps they'll see this and do something in some official capacity. I wouldn't be surprised if a revision or two down the line we don't see a clock and button allocation added to the official firmware. They're awesome ideas and all the hard work of actually implementing them are done, so I see no reason why they wouldn't aside from sheer stubborness. |

No worries, Azayzel, I suffer from the same malady myself, and as I said, I wasn't even sure I was the one who said it. I'm still not entirely sure, even now.

Glad to help - your post several months ago suggesting this procedure stuck in my Reader Reptilian Brain. When I got the spare it was the first thing I thought to do with it.
I was going to let it go longer, but the firmware update came out and I wanted to apply it to both of my readers. OCD fighting with scientific discovery Cheers, Bob Last edited by BobVA; 08-15-2007 at 06:18 PM. |

No worries, I think that 3 weeks is more than sufficient to demonstrate its viability.

You can do the same thing without the paper clip. If you are one who is confident in flashing the reader you can go into the \opt\sony\ebook\application\resources\applicationS tart.xml and change one of the functions you don't use often to do="doQuit" I did "0x42-hold" do="doQuit" since I don't find myself rotating the screen very often. This makes it "power down" when you hold the size button for 5-10 seconds. Then next time you go to use it you will have to wait for the reader to "boot" but if your going 2-3 weeks without using your reader you are probably going to be willing to wait 2 mins for it to boot and be able to still have some battery to work with!
