So...
I have read on the NC for over 7 hours, and did about 3.5 hours non-stop last night before falling asleep -- no eyestrain. Really, eyestrain was one of my original (and personally untested) criticisms of tablets vs. e-ink. But so far all is well. Another worry I had was bright sunlight on the LCD screen. We had a remarkably sunny day yesterday in the Colorado foothills, and I sat on the deck for a bit. Turned up the contrast to full and read with only minor glare issues. I'm hoping the non-glare screen protector will fix that. The battery life still sucks. I got about 10 hours after rooting, with heavy-duty reading, some intermittent downloading and playing with apps, Gmail running in the background, an showing it off to the kids (while avoiding the missus, who hasn't yet figured out I have a different e-reader). It's a far cry from my K3's incredible battery 3 week battery life! I really enjoy the ability to have "shelves" with cover thumbnails displayed. I can create real collections without the kludgy workarounds some of our brilliant fellow Kindlers have come up with. And yes, as much as I hate to admit it, I really do enjoy the fact that my NC is an e-reader than can do a few other things. Now I don't have to stay close to my laptop or keep my phone handy to check those pesky work emails that come thru even though the hospital lets me off a couple of days a week! Besides, jailbreaking my K3 just didn't give me the same thrill that rooting the NC did. Yeh, it was jailbroke and I installed the SS hack. Whoo... Rooting the NC gives me a whole new dimension of screwing around with my device. For those who are waiting around to see what goodies come from CES, yes that crossed my mind as well. But I don't want a cheap Meoyonasonic imitator (yes, I made that up), I hate Apple for their monopolistic, "we know what's best for you" attitude, and I'm not gonna wait around for $500+ tablets from reputable companies to drop in price. Santa kinda gave me the shaft this year, so I bought myself a new toy. Don't worry; I can dink around with my toys and still find at least 3 or 4 hours a day to read. On an average day off (like today) I've already read 4 hours, and am going back to it after dinner. |

Congrats on your new toy! Nothing bad about it. I mean, I have an iPod and just bought a Sansa. If I could afford it, I'd probably have more than one ereader too, no matter how much I adore my Kindle. My eyes dictated that I go with eink, but I'd love to have a tablet-type device to use sometimes too.

when i first read about the nook color, i wondered whether it wasn't maybe $250 for old tech with a new form factor. is there something special about the display? how's battery life?
i like the e-ink nook quite a lot. it's really pretty, and i've pondered getting one to use for library borrowing. |

Rooting NC
If you rooted the Nook Color, couldn't you just install the Kindle App for Android and not have to convert all your books? Seems like an easier process, then you could still buy books from Amazon and read them on the Nook Color, PC, or the K3.

My plan -- at least for now -- are to continue to load all my books into Calibre and make both mobi and epub formats. Then when I hook up either the K3 or the NC i can tell Calibre to send the appropriate format to that device. Of course, this may be more of my anal-retentiveness in action. |

Battery life is where the NC really sucks, but I knew it going into this. My K3 typically last 3 weeks with very heavy reading. The NC is rated for about 8 hours, and my informal tests in the past 2.5 days have yielded me about 8-10 hours. |

When I first got my iPhone, I was excited about all the different apps especially gaming ones and I whiled away hour after hour on the things. That passed (thankfully) and the apps I use most frequently now are all reading ones such as Kindle and Stanza.
The urge for gaming has completely gone for me. So usage can definitely alter over time. |

I've been looking at the NC for a nice, well-built android tablet, but the only way I could presently afford one was if i sold my Kindle Wifi+3g, which ain't gonna happen soon. I think I'm with the other poster who said that if/when they hit the $150 range, I'd look at it. I'm in love with my Android phone (and it's only an HTC Hero!) and would love a bridge device so I don' thave to pull out my laptop so often.

Over 100 tablets to be announced at CES. I would have waited for one that could run Honeycomb...but then you wouldn't have been able to have the fun you've had.

I love the Nook Color, its a fantastic device, I would love to get one.
But I would be using it as an ipad alternative, or an android tablet, call it whatever you like. As far as reading books and novels, I cant read them on computer screens, netbooks, or tablet pcs. I get headaches and blurry vision. Only Eink for me. Same for manga. Nook Color is a great device, but Id use it in addition to the kindle, not in place of it |
