Thank you for the jpg for comparison. The image on the PRS 505 looks quite good compared to the original in my opinion.

Scanlations are done by amateurs and with the really popular manga like Naruto there's a sort of competition between groups to release the latest chapter before others. Thus the quality often suffers.

These are illegal productions done by copyright-violating criminals, are they not? a reminder to everybody that we do not permit discussion of illegal material on MR.

AFAIK, non-commercial copyright infringement is not a criminal offense yet. So it would be a mistake to call scanlators "criminals".

It's certainly illegal, even if "merely" a civil offence rather than a criminal one. To my mind, it is inappropriate to condone the actions of people such as these who knowingly and cynically break the law.

True scanlation seems like a bit of a gray area, since the translations of many manga aren't available in English. I used to buy the manga in Japanese from Kinokuniya and download translated scripts, and read them side-by-side, but that really is inconvenient for anyone who's not trying to learn Japanese.
On the other hand, I can see that scanlations are often still circulated even after the commercial translations are available. Some of this might be because some people prefer the fan translations (there are some commercial translations that I really dislike), but then again, the quality of the fan translations is... shall we say... "highly variable." Some of the circulation is probably due to people being cheap about paying for manga, but some may be due to the lack of official e-manga (at least in Western countries). All that being said, I think we can "discuss" scanlation here, but as with other pirated content, ought not to post whole works. Posting a single page image for hardware display comparisons seems harmless enough, though. It's just a scanned page, whatever the source. |

Just want to bump this link again: http://hightech.afmag.net/reading-ma...ve-review.html
I convert all manga to lrf, because this reduces the sizes considerably. 200MB into 20MB or less. And with even these sizes, a 2GB card gets filled up really quick. Quote:
So it's really a gray area, especially since there are official translated manga which gets retranslated because scanlation groups gave a better translation to the publisher. (GTO is an example of these) |
