"2022 - 2024 with 0 discontinued". Sorry, I meant to say "Readers MADE between 2022-2024.

Kobos are impressing me more and more. I just wish they made 8" ereaders. 7.8" at least. I also do not want a color eReader. I guess I will wait for another year to see what comes out.

Kobo does make an 8" model. It's called Kobo Sage, and many people here have one.

The Clara 2E was released in September 2022 and discontinued in April 2024.

I think @pypeke is talking about a Reader like the Forma.

I looked at the Sage, but people said the battery did not last as long as other ereaders. Smaller battery. I am guessing that Kobo might fix that in the future. Maybe?

Unlikely that the battery will be changed since that would require a whole new cycle of approvals. A smaller battery ( 1200mAH) and a quad core CPU with the infamous Sunxi power management are not a great recipe for long battery life. For my uses, I find the battery lasts long enough—I seldom read more that 10 hours without pause—and it charges faster than most of my older Kobo devices.

What level of changes would need a new approval cycle? Would making it a repairable device need re-submission? Because they seem to have committed to that for future devices.

IIRC the Forma also has the small battery, but it doesn't have the Sage's reputation for poor battery life, because the Forma uses the same slow CPU as the older Libra and Clara models. It's the Sage's CPU that's the real problem, and Kobo will probably swap that out for the Sage 2.

If you look at the FCC listings, you will see that they list batteries, CPUs, memory, antenna, etc. Any use of a part not already on the list will result in having to go through the whole approval process again.

Probably since Kobo swapped out the same 4 core 1.8GHz CPU that was used in the Elipsa for a two core MediaTek 8113 dual core 2GHz CPU used in the Elipsa 2E. The Libra Colour, Clara Colour and the Clara BW also use MediaTek CPUs (as do the Kindle Scribe, Paperwhite 11th gen and Kindle 11th gen).

However the Sage's runtime isn't poor, just not as good as many other eink. It's still excellent and I rarely have to explicitly charge*. When I do it's about 45 min.
I read many hours most days.

(* I manage with Calibre and don't rush to unplug and most weeks that's enough charging)

What's the actual runtime? I'd estimate that you can get maybe 40 hours of reading time on the Libra 2 if you don't use the frontlight.

I've not measured it in hours. Maybe 3 or 4 decent novels. Could be half the Libra 2 (which I have, but recently lent to a proof reader who has misplaced a Kobo).

But due to doing something else on computer after eject from Calibre and not unplugging the cable, it rarely needs explicitly charged. Not all chargers "fast charge" (maybe 1.5A); many only charge at 500mA even though "rated" at 2A (Lidl, CEX).

I've a selection of power banks and never needed to use them with it.

The Oasis 2 had shorter run time.

Quite a few people in the family have a Kobo Sage and no-one has ever complained about any aspect of it.

I would get your Libra 2 back. Don't lend it to anyone as you may not be able to replace it should anything happen to it.
