Thanks for all the responses. I was able to use some primitive regex to wipe out all the line numbers. Then some global replacement of several CSS entries with the one for normal paragraphs fixed it all up.
Each line of the poetry is one paragraph in the code, yes. If anyone wants to see any snippets of the code or the CSS, I'll be glad to oblige, but my problem is basically solved. |

That's why it cannot be done. There is no way to do this properly. Even if you had columns, it cannot be done correctly.

For what it may be worth, I have two books of poetry where the creator used a table for the stanza/verse numbers. The stanza numbers are in a narrow column on the left hand edge and the rest of the screen width is the 2nd column for the verses. I've also seen on Gutenberg, a version of a Shakespeare's play with the numbers on the right hand side.
So yes, it can be done but it's a nasty manual procedure in the two books I have. |

The table grows size to hold the field. the font baseline stays. Now, if you play tricks to move the number around in the number column (away from where it would normally land), Yes, you can break it |

That's why I've said line numbers cannot be done reliably.

Jon, did you even read what @theducks said? Breaking it will require someone to edit the code. If so, blame the nidjit who edited the code.
I just checked on the two poetry books I have and changing the font size did nothing until got to the point where the number took more than 50% of the screen to display. At that point, I was seeing 1-2 words per row in the text section. This happened with 3 applications on my computer, a Kobo Sage and a Kobo Libra Colour. Yes, it is fragile. Yes, I would not recommend doing it. Yes, it is reliable but requires too much manual input for my taste. |
