Me too. I'd like to read more non-fiction and recommendations are hard to come by. The nomination threads always yield a few good choices for me to add to my to-be-read list. I've already enjoyed 3 from last September's thread.

I just noticed that we have History as a category. How is that any different from most Non-Fiction? Unless it's written about right now, it's history.
Take the book Steve Jobs. It's about the past. So it's History. They are almost the same. |

The good thing about non-fiction winning is that I can take a break from the book club for a month.
Not that there's anything wrong with non-fiction of course. |

A biography is specialised form of history (or at least this is what I think you are arguing), but not all history is a biography. So history would give a much wider scope for nomination than biography would. Likewise, non-fiction sits above history as a top-level generalisation. Not all non-fiction is a history, nor is it necessarily a biography. So you would have again, a wider scope. The people nominating and seconding biography are obviously looking for a very specific type of non-fiction, whereas those supporting non-fiction are not necessarily happy with biographies specifically and would like a broader range of subjects to choose from. Do we have some existing rule that precludes different levels of specialisation being used for categories? Eg. could we not have Fantasy and Steampunk competing against each other? |

I put my vote in for Historical Fiction. I just finished "A Lantern in Her Hand" by Bess Streeter Aldrich, which I enjoyed very much. It has encouraged me to read more of her books.
I am currently reading "Toilers of the Sea" by Victor Hugo, another Historical Fiction and so far a good book. I guess I just like Historical Fiction. |

@Caleb72: I believe it depends on what the nominator said about the category to start. They could specify fantasy, but caveat it that it excludes steampunk. It all depends on what is said about the category to start.
I tend to not like history or biography much, but I am interested in a lot of non-fiction. I find it's a very diverse category and usually a good discussion in the nomination phase itself. |

I just noticed a mistake in the poll. The entry for Modern Literature is missing the definition. It should show...
Modern Literature (books published in the last 10 years) I don't know if that's screwing with the results or not. |

I left that tag off unintentionally when I removed the nominators' names from the category. It's fixed now. It shouldn't affect the results, though, as the definition was and is available for all to see in the July nominations thread.

Non-fiction doing well so far - but a few others not too far behind. Too tough to call at this stage.
