No revisionism here.
Ack! After reading the excerpt, I think I'd rather read the "revisionism." Or the "middle ground" books that look at all sides of Richard the Third. Or Shakespeare's play because it is more exciting. But thanks for all the cool links anyway.

Last Plane Out of Saigon by Richard Pena & John Hagan, a military history memoir. This is new from start-up Story Merchant Books, who've previously republished some vintage pulp crime thrillers. The full blurb notes that Hagan is a prominent professor with many publications to his credit.

In 1973, sixty-one days after the Paris Peace Accords was signed specifying that American troops must withdraw from Vietnam—one day beyond the terms of the agreement—Richard Pena, was among the final handful of Americans to leave the country.

LAST PLANE OUT OF SAIGON is a faithful reproduction of the journal he kept as a draftee working in the operating room of Vietnam's largest military hospital during the final year of the war. Supporting historical and political context is provided by award-winning scholar, John Hagan. Richard’s entries were written in real time and, as they chronicle the last desperate year of this tragic war, present readers with a better understanding of the complicated final year of the Vietnam War from the inside, looking out. A year that tragically remains unfamiliar to most Americans.

Free today on Amazon UK - Gallipoli 1915 by Tim Travers

Spoiler:
'Why was the Allied naval assault of 1915 such a failure?

Did the Ottoman Turks know about the Allied landings?

And did Sir Ian Hamilton, the overall commander of the Allied forces at Gallipoli, really blunder by intervening at Suvla?

These questions, and the key issue of why the Ottoman Turks won the Gallipoli campaign – or why the Allies lost it – have never been satisfactorily answered.

‘Gallipoli 1915’ aims to answer them, while also telling the dramatic story of what actually happened through the voices of British, Australian, and Turkish soldiers who took part in one of the hardest-fought battles of World War One.

In order to understand the bloody events of 1915, Tim Travers is the first historian of Gallipoli to use the Ottoman archives in Ankara to tell the other side of the story.

This startling new interpretation of the 1915 conflict is a challenging analysis of the enduring mysteries of the Gallipoli campaign.

Tim Travers is Professor of History at the University of Calgary in Canada. His great uncle was killed in action at Gallipoli and the author has dedicated the last five years to finding out what really went wrong for the Allies in 1915. His other books include the widely praised ‘The Killing Ground’. He has also contributed to ‘The Oxford Illustrated History of the First World War’ and ‘The Oxford History of the British Army’. He lives in Canada.

The Death of Glory: The Western Front, 1915 by Robin Neillands
The First World War remains a controversial subject: the bitter reality is often clouded with popular - and damaging - myths.

Many of these misconceptions relate to the competence of the generals and the true outcomes and achievements of battles - particularly the battles fought during 1915.

The reality of these battles has increasingly been distorted by the allegation that the men were ‘lions led by donkeys’, with much of the blame put on the relevant commanders.

A superb work of both narrative - and argumentative - history.

Robin Neillands is the author of several acclaimed works on the First World War including ‘The Great War Generals on the Western Front’, ‘Attrition: The Great War on the Western Front, 1916’ and ‘The Old Contemptibles’.

Citadel: The Battle of Kursk by Robin Cross
It was the greatest armoured clash in the history of the world - and the decisive battle of World War II. Two vast armies engaged one another on land and in the air, in a conflict that included the most costly single day of aerial warfare of all time.

This was the battle of Kursk - a battle so terrible that even Hitler confessed it made his ‘stomach turn over’.

Citadel was the last great German offensive on the Eastern Front; its aim was to claw back the initiative after the surrender of the Sixth Army at Stalingrad in January 1943.
Robin Cross is a distinguished journalist and military historian whose books include VE Day: Victory in Europe, The Bombers: Strategy and Tactics and The US Marine Corps.

The Wolf's Lair: Inside Hitler's Germany by Roger Moorhouse
What happened inside the infamous 'Wolf's Lair', one of Hitler's headquarters?

Who was the Nazi serial killer?

And who was the man who 'started' World War Two?

These are just some of the questions explored in Roger Moorhouse's collection of essays 'The Wolf's Lair: Inside Hitler's Germany'.

In one essay Moorhouse wrestles with the question of how much Berliners knew about the ongoing Holocaust. In another, he investigates the fascinating story of ‘Germania’; the planned rebuilding of Berlin, asking what the plan tells us about Nazi Germany.

Roger Moorhouse is a best-selling historian. A specialist in modern German, he is author of “Killing Hitler” (2006), an account of the many plots on Hitler’s life, and of the critically acclaimed “Berlin at War” (2010), which used first-hand accounts to illuminate the little-told story of the civilian experience of wartime Berlin. He has also been a regular contributor to both the ‘BBC History Magazine’ and ‘History Today’ for over a decade.

THE BATTLE OF JERUSALEM - a Short History of the Six-Day War: June 1967 by Clifford Irving, originally out from Macmillan in 1970.

A short and spellbinding book about the Six-Day War of June 1967, in which Israel fought for its life for the third time in its brief history – and won a decisive victory against overwhelming odds. The author was there as a correspondent for NBC-TV, became a friend of Israeli soldiers and pilots, witnessed part of the battle for the Golan Heights, and traveled post-war to the Suez Canal in a command car with Irwin Shaw, Jules Dassin, and Martha Gellhorn.

Illustrated with rare and moving photographs of the battles, plus clear maps.

Two titles from Allison Weir...

Britain's Royal Families: The Complete Genealogy
Amazon.com ($2.99) | Google Play ($2.85) | (not dropped elsewhere yet)
Quote:
'George III is alleged to have married secretly, on 17th April, 1759, a Quakeress called Hannah Lightfoot, daughter of a Wapping shoemaker, who is said to have borne him three children. Documents relating to the alleged marriage, bearing the Prince's signature, were impounded and examined in 1866 by the Attorney General. Learned opinion at the time leaned to the view that these documents were genuine. They were then placed in the Royal Archives at Windsor; in 1910, permission was refused a would-be author who asked to see them. If George III did make such a marriage when he was Prince of Wales, before the passing of the Royal Marriages Act in 1772, then his subsequent marriage to Queen Charlotte was bigamous, and every monarch of Britain since has been a usurper, the rightful heirs of George III being his children by Hannah Lightfoot, if they ever existed.' From Britain's Royal Families

Britain's Royal Families is a unique reference book. It provides, for the first time in one volume, complete genealogical details of all members of the royal houses of England, Scotland and Great Britain - from 800AD to the present. Here is the vital biographical information relating not only to each monarch, but also to every member of their immediate family, from parents to grandchildren. Drawing on countless authorities, both ancient and modern, Alison Weir explores the royal family tree in unprecedented depth and provides a comprehensive guide to the heritage of today's royal family.

The Wars of the Roses has dropped to $1.99
Amazon.com | Kobo | Google | eBooks.com | B&N
Quote:
Lancaster and York. For much of the fifteenth century, these two families were locked in battle for control of the British monarchy. Kings were murdered and deposed. Armies marched on London. Old noble names were ruined while rising dynasties seized power and lands. The war between the royal House of Lancaster and York, the longest and most complex in British history, profoundly altered the course of the monarchy. In The Wars of the Roses, Alison Weir reconstructs this conflict with the same dramatic flair and impeccable research that she brought to her highly praised The Princes in the Tower.

The first battle erupted in 1455, but the roots of the conflict reached back to the dawn of the fifteenth century, when the corrupt, hedonistic Richard II was sadistically murdered, and Henry IV, the first Lancastrian king, seized England's throne. Both Henry IV and his son, the cold warrior Henry V, ruled England ably, if not always wisely--but Henry VI proved a disaster, both for his dynasty and his kingdom. Only nine months old when his father's sudden death made him king, Henry VI became a tormented and pathetic figure, weak, sexually inept, and prey to fits of insanity. The factional fighting that plagued his reign escalated into bloody war when Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York, laid claim to the throne that was rightfully his--and backed up his claim with armed might.

Alison Weir brings brilliantly to life both the war itself and the historic figures who fought it on the great stage of England. Here are the queens who changed history through their actions--the chic, unconventional Katherine of Valois, Henry V's queen; the ruthless, social-climbing Elizabeth Wydville; and, most crucially, Margaret of Anjou, a far tougher and more powerful character than her husband,, Henry VI, and a central figure in the Wars of the Roses.

Here, too, are the nobles who carried the conflict down through the generations--the Beauforts, the bastard descendants of John of Gaunt, Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, known to his contemporaries as "the Kingmaker"; and the Yorkist King, Edward IV, a ruthless charmer who pledged his life to cause the downfall of the House of Lancaster.

The Wars of the Roses is history at its very best--swift and compelling, rich in character, pageantry, and drama, and vivid in its re-creation of an astonishing, dangerous, and often grim period of history. Alison Weir, one of the foremost authorities on the British royal family, demonstrates here that she is also one of the most dazzling stylists writing history today.

Hell's Highway: Chronicle of the 101st Airborne Division in the Holland Campaign, September-November 1944 by George Koskimaki
Quote:
Hell’s Highway is a history, most of which has never before been written. It is adventure recorded by those who lived it and put into context by an author who was also there. It is human drama on an enormous scale, told through the personal stories of 612 contributors of written and oral accounts of the Screaming Eagles’ part in the attempt to liberate the Netherlands.

Koskimaki is an expert in weaving together individual recollections to make a compelling and uniquely first-hand account of the bravery and deprivations suffered by the troops, and their hopes, fears, triumphs, and tragedies, as well as those of Dutch civilians caught up in the action.

There have been many books published on Operation Market Garden and there will surely be more. This book, however, gets to the heart of the action. The “big picture,” which most histories paint, here is just the context for the real history on the ground.

Sunday in Hell: Pearl Harbor Minute by Minute by Bill McWilliams
Quote:
Using long-established historical records and contemporary journals, as well as recently released wartime documents, Bill McWilliams has created a brand-new minute-by-minute narrative of the Day That Will Live in Infamy. Told from the points of view of dozens of characters, from generals and admirals and politicians and diplomats down to deckhands and private soldiers and innocent civilians at all levels, this panoramic overview of one of the most traumatizing and shocking events in American history puts the reader in a position to understand the big picture of strategy and tactics, as well as the intimate details of what the chaos, violence, and presence of death felt like to people immersed in the surprise of an armed attack on American soil.

December 7, 1941, was a turning point in the history of the United States, which had been teetering on a decision between isolationism and intervention. One might argue that every US military engagement since then has been affected by what happened when America learned that it could not stand by and watch war among strangers without potentially becoming involved—whether we wished to or not.

The Miracle of Dunkirk by Walter Lord
Quote:
Stranded on the beach with the Nazis closing in, the British army managed one of the most unlikely maneuvers in modern military history

In May of 1940, the remnants of the French and British armies, broken by Hitler’s blitzkrieg, retreated to Dunkirk. Hemmed in by overwhelming Nazi strength, the 338,000 men who gathered on that beach were all that stood between Hitler and Western Europe. Crush them, and the path to Paris and London was clear. And so, unable to retreat any farther, the Allied soldiers set up defense positions and prayed for deliverance.

Prime Minister Winston Churchill ordered an evacuation on May 26th, expecting to save no more than a handful of his men. But Britain would not let its soldiers down. Hundreds of fishing boats, pleasure yachts, and commercial vessels streamed into the Channel to back up the Royal Navy, and in a week nearly the entire army was ferried safely back to England. Assembled from interviews with hundreds of survivors who witnessed the evacuation, The Miracle of Dunkirk is a striking history of a week when the fate of Britain hung in the balance.
