@beckywc, Right now the plugin uses the title for the filename of the APNX (unless you specify the file instead of selecting it in your library). The filename it created using the title has a : in it. :'s are prohibited characters. I plan on putting out a new version soon that will use the "Save to Disk" filename template for the file names. I will also correct this bug while I'm at it.

So I am going to ask a stupid question - I see the description of this plug-in however, I still don't understand what it means....APNX? What is this? Is this something like the ASIN?
My understanding is that Calibre now adds the ASIN and ebok info when converting books....I have re-converting my entire Calibre library to ensure this information has been added to each book. Do I now need to re-convert using this plug-in? Sorry to not understand the importance of this..but any clarification on why I would want to use this plug-in would be helpful. Thanks in advance. |

The APNX file is used by the Kindle to give page numbers. It is a separate file that when present will allow the Kindle 3 with the 3.1 firmware to show pages in addition to location.

Thank you for this! Is there anything out there that will look at the books on my kindle and flag up if there is no APNX file for it? That would make identifying the books that need one easier.

You only need this plugin if you are not using "Send to device" when sending files to your Kindle. "Send to device" automatically generates and sends the APNX to a the Kindle with the book. This plugin is only needed if you already have books on your Kindle you want to create APNX files for (and you don't want to re send them).

APNX and page numbers
I'm working on a book that will be sent to Amazon. I got the generator to work fine, but now know that the page numbers won't show until the book comes FROM Amazon (if I understand your most recent post about "checking with Amazon"). But, my question is this...if I create an epub file from an InDesign file and then convert that to a mobi file in Calibre and then use the APNX generator on it, where does it get page number information? Sorry if this is a stupid question but it's a new concept to me.

Question:
Is there a way to use the info from this Plugin to populate & display a "# of pages" field in Calibre?

No. The plugin only works by reading MOBI files. It cannot determine page length from any other format. Also it is a slow process because the plugin decompresses the MOBI text and parsers it to determine where a page begins / ends.

I was just playing around and got the apnx files to work in the kindle for PC app, the .apnx file needs to be named with the ASIN of the book. example "B002953482_EBOK.apnx" which is the ASIN number I gave "A Modern Utopia - H. G. Wells.mobi. |
