I've moved across the country (the U.S.) a couple of times, and each time the majority of the moving truck was filled with books. I have some old/rare books, but mostly it's just my collection of not-quite-every book I've ever owned. As a book junkie and former grad student in the humanities, that's a lot of books. I fell in love with my current condo because the second bedroom was converted into a library (wall-to-wall floor-to-ceiling built-in bookcases). I was doing pretty well with fitting my collection into the library until my book-collecting boyfriend moved in.

So, since we're out of room again anyway, it's a good time to get the Reader. I'm certain I won't be able to completely stop buying paper books, but maybe I can at least slow down the tide. And maybe I will actually sell/donate some of my old books, as I have been planning to do for years.

Don, Thank you so much for converting and posting the VanDine material. It is exceptionally kind of you to make your efforts available to all the rest of us in that fashion. Extaordianarily readable conversion. Excellent work. Undying gratitiude and all that, don'cha know.

All the great credit for S. S. Van Dine should go to HARRY

Culling each time I move, I've got myself down to a collection I can have completely available (all on shelves at last). 600 some hardbacks, and approx 900 paperbacks. This includes about 100 Easton Press leatherbound, and a scattering of collectible sci fi classics. I continue to purchase some hardbounds, and paperbacks, but the reader is proving invaluable, for keeping my collection from growing out of control again.

That's a collection I can admire. Last year I sold about 25 Easton Press books on Ebay, depleting my entire collection of those editions.

Of the 600-odd hardbacks you have, are they also mainly Sci-Fi?

Also, I'm curious to know how many bookshelves you actually have, now that all your books are accessible.

Thanks,
Don

I've got a hefty Balzac collection (about 15 feet of shelf-space).
This includes Balzac's whole oeuvre in French, in the beautiful Pleiade editions (mostly bought at the weekend book market in the Parc George Brassens in Paris - so they are also holiday momentos).
I've also got the complete Everyman-Dent set of the translated works, plus a nearly-complete set of the Caxton series, a variety of other odd volumes in translation, and some criticism and commentaries.
And I've read them.

I can see you really love Balzac!

I'm curious to know if you plan to work on any Balzac for the upload section.

Connect has quite a lot of titles available, the Classics priced at $1.99, but I dislike the fact that there are no links for any of these inexpenisve classics.

Perhaps 75% S.F. I have some inexpensive full-height 3-ft wide shelves from Staples/Office Depot ... (5). A little space gets used up for 250/300 cd holders, I have some books stacked on the top of the cases, and I have the paperbacks alpha sorted, but stacked 2 deep ... it's a tight squeeze ... I had to give my DVD's their own bookcase, and stack those 2 deep also, to free up enough space to make it.

I may well upload some more Balzac if people would like some. I was half-thinking of 'Cousin Bette'.

Is Cousin Bette what she was before she was Ugly Betty?

Harry, my humblest apologies for the misacreditation and heartfelt gratitude for the excellent work. It was the Bentley that Don did the work on. I'm afraid I will have to admit to such an overwhelming paroxysm of greed upon finding those files that my lust for literature overwhelmed any vestiges of the finer instincts that I may normally lay claim to. Really, I owe thanks to both of you. I've been converting txt files to rtf for my Sony reader and enjoying it immensely but, really, the conversions you two have been doing and sharing are quite above and beyond the call.

Most Contritely Yours,

Ted

Thank you for such kind words.

So many people here - beyond Harry and myself - are adding some wonderful reading material to the book Uploads.

Thanks,
Don
