While connected to your computer create a "DO_FACTORY_RESTORE" file (make sure there is no extension, if you're using Windows Explorer will probably add ".txt" extension, rename the file to remove the extension) on Kindle drive and force a Kindle reboot (by holding power buttons 30+ seconds) if needed to trigger a factory reset.
Factory reset is probably needed to clean things up after firmware downgrade.

If that fixes things and you manage to boot back all the way to Kindle homescreen then do 2 more reboots and while device os starting look at that bottom section of the screen where you previously saw that "**JAILBREAK**" text if something gets written or not.

If you get to do a factory reset make sure that during the setup you skip connecting to the WiFi. And later keep Airplane mode turned on, until you get to use OTA Renamer KUAL extension no going online!
After doing all that report here in details what happened.

Just do a factory reset by creating DO_FACTORY_RESTORE file + forcing a reboot after creating it, as instructed.

its working now again!
during factory reset this "**SQUASH JB**" appeared instead of "**JAILBREAK**"
The device is left unregistered and on airplane mode.
The device is still on 5.16.2.1.1. However "**JAILBREAK**" no longer shows up upon restart. And only the following folders are available on the root folder when the kindle is connected to the PC: "audible", "documents", "fonts" and "voice".

Do 2 more reboot, then try installing hotfix bin using 'Update Your Kindle'. Report here did the hotfix install or not.
If it did install do 2 more reboots just in case.

Ok. After you've done that continue with step 5 in my first comment:

So in short: Install KUAL using ;log mrpi > unpack OTA Renamer extension > open KUAL > use / click on "rename" button.

After that you can safely use WiFi. So if you want and did do that already you can register your Kindle to your Amazon account.

You need to download and unpack MRPI extension:

https://storage.gra.cloud.ovh.net/v1...-r19303.tar.xz

And for KOReader you'll have to copy over both koreader folder and extensions folder, since doing factory reset deleted those also

BTW for installing KUALBooklet, do I need to install the KUALBooklet hotfix first?

Did you rename OTA binaries? To block firmware updates over WiFi.
