This is an Amazon US deal on books that are available at other e-tailers, but at significantly higher prices. They appear to be independently or small-press published, but I've taken the plunge on the first three out of four novels (not counting the Christmas short) and have the other one on my wish list; I've put my money where my mouth is.

The first three Carrie Hatchett, Space Adventurer novels are US$0.99 each at Amazon, for an unknown period of time. I picked the first book up as a freebie back in August, so I'm guessing its 99-cent price is normal, but the middle two - like book four - are usually $3.99. The blurb for book one is:

Quote:
The galaxy is in crisis, and Carrie Hatchett is the last person on Earth who should be fixing it.

Carrie is a low-achieving daydreamer. After providing a good home for her butt-ugly dog and psychotic cat, her biggest challenge in life is to avoid being fired, again.

But a strange green mist sucks her beneath her kitchen sink, and an unusual clerical error leads to an offer she foolishly doesn’t refuse.

The Transgalactic Council hire her to settle a conflict between the mechanical placktoids and the mysterious oootoon. Carrie must overcome her personal weaknesses and, for the first time in her life, succeed in her job, to uncover a threat to the entire galaxy.
This series looks like a lot of fun, and there are enough positive reviews to make me take the chance.

Trace of Magic by Diana Pharaoh Francis is currently on sale for $0.99.

I've read this and loved it. It's UF with magic users instead of paranormal creatures. According to the publisher it should be on sale until Jan 14 at all retailers.

Path of Fate by Diana Pharaoh Francis (The Path Trilogy Book 1)
$1.99
https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/path-of-fate-2

Synopsis
Orphaned by her mother and passed from family to family in the village of Kallas in the land of Kodu Riik, Reisil feels as if she will never truly belong. But her training as a tark, or healer, offers her the promise of acceptance by the townsfolk, and as her talents emerge, it appears she will finally be able to hold her head high.

But fate has another path in store: A goshawk named Saljane swoops into her life, and Reisil discovers that she is able to communicate telepathically with the animal. This is an undeniable sign that Reisil has been chosen by Lady Amiya, the goddess of Kodu Riik, to become an ahalad-kaaslane—a guardian of the land who must live a life of constant travel and forgo the very bonds of family and community the girl healer so desires.

Though the role of ahalad-kaaslane is a noble one, Reisil cannot bear the thought of losing the ties with society she has worked so hard to form. She rejects the Lady’s appointment, ignoring the goshawk no matter how persistently it follows her. But when a kidnapping plot breaks a treaty with the neighboring country of Patverseme, Reisil realizes the sentient bird of prey is the only creature capable of tracking the traitors down and saving Kodu Riik from the evils of war. Reluctantly, Reisil accepts her destiny as an ahalad-kaaslane, and embarks on a dangerous pursuit of the kidnappers—and a perilous trek of self-discovery—in order to save two kingdoms.

James Alan Gardner's Expendable is 99¢ at Amazon US and Kobo right now.

I've read this book multiple times and recommend it highly. Many of you may have picked up series books three and onward in the recent Great Open Road Giveaway.

IMPORTANT PRO TIP: the series is set in the same universe, but book two has a different setting and very different feel from Expendable and most of the later books. I'm convinced that Gardner's later books were in the giveaway because people read Expendable, think "wow!" and head to "Commitment Hour" and decide he's a one-hit wonder. Move straight on to book three, Vigilant, instead.

Blurb which doesn't capture Festina's great narrative voice:
Spoiler:
In Expendable, the first volume of the League of Peoples, Festina Ramos is assigned to escort an unstable admiral to planet Melaquin. Little is known about Melaquin, for every explorer who’s landed there has disappeared. It’s come to be known as the “planet of no return,” and the High Council has made a habit of sending troublesome admirals there in an attempt to get rid of them. It’s clear that this is intended to be Ramos’s last mission, but she doesn’t plan on dying, no matter how expendable she may be.

Mileage varies; Commitment Hour's what got me hooked. But then, I've always liked stories that dig into gender roles and gender identity.

I've always found it a pity the books are shoehorned into "a series" in this fashion. I just encountered Commitment Hour as Gardner's second book, without expecting it to be a sequel, and now it's "book two of."

I had a particular friend in mind, when I remarked on the reading order - he will quote a couple of Expendable catch phrases at me to this day, but I've never been able to coax him very far into or past Commitment Hour. Good to encounter a divergent opinion.

The Tar-aiym Krang (Adventures of Pip & Flinx Book 2) by Alan Dean Foster -- $0.99 (#2 of 14)
At Amazon USA

I've read the entire series, and enjoyed it. I would class the series as light fun reading. Trying to replace all my DTBs, but the books don't go on sale often,

Moth was a beautiful planet, the only one with wings -- two great golden clouds suspended in space around it.

Here was a wide-open world for any venture a man might scheme. The planet attracted unwary travelers, hardened space-sailors, and merchant buccaneers -- a teeming, constantly shifting horde that provided a comfortable income for certain quick-witted fellows like Flinx and his pet flying snake Pip. With his odd talents, the pickings were easy enough so that Flinx did not have to be dishonest ... most of the time.

In fact, it hardly seemed dishonest at all to steal a starmap from a dead body that didn't really need it anymore. But Flinx wasn't quite smart enough. He should have wondered why the body was dead in the first place...
