LOL!
Oddly enough, I know the word from my youthful readings of Regency Romances. Georgette Heyer writes very well researched books. Her gentlemen have a habit of watching pugilists, or going to the gym weekly to have a bout with a titled ex-pugilist. Or some such! |

I guess I missed the June and July free ebooks, but the August free ebook is The Appian Way: Ghost Road, Queen of Roads by Robert A. Kaster.
“A wonderful preface for any traveler planning an outdoorsy day in Rome or, especially, a trip through southern Italy. Kaster’s enthusiasm for the road and the people (past and present) who populate it is contagious.”—Library Journal |

This month's free book is Wasted World: How Our Consumption Challenges the Planet by
Rob Hengeveld. “Hengeveld successfully reveals how population size, resource exploitation, and the threat of system collapse are all interrelated issues that humanity must face up to if it is to avert collapse and have a future on planet Earth.”—Times Higher Education |

For November, the University of Chicago Press free ebooks is a sequel to Pride and Prejudice.
What became of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy? Of the Bennet family and the de Bourghs? Of Mr. Collins and Charlotte Lucas? Our free e-book for November is Presumption: An Entertainment by Julia Barrett, a witty sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Presumption follows the fate of Georgiana Darcy, Mr. Darcy’s younger sister, who must choose between two suitors, a well-placed navy captain and a brash young architect. Masterfully adapted to Austen’s original Regency era style, Presumption brings back to life the world of Austen’s best novel. |

For December the University of Chicago free ebook is The Camera Does the Rest by Peter Buse.
Back in the day, a Polaroid camera was a staple of holiday gatherings. Then came digital and the Polaroid Corporation went bankrupt. In our free e-book for December, The Camera Does the Rest: How Polaroid Changed Photography, Peter Buse looks at the rise and fall of Polaroid. He shows how Polaroid was not only a new photo technology, but a new kind of photography, one that has much in common with Instagram and other image-based social media. “This book covers all of the cultural perceptions and scientific discoveries that made Polaroid something very special and leaves us with a clear sense of its lost pleasures, too. For Buse, Polaroid is not just an object of nostalgia, it is a catalyst undeniably linked to the massive changes we’ve seen in social rituals and imaging technology in our lifetime.”—American Photo |

For January, 2020, the University of Chicago free ebook is American Girls in Red Russia: Chasing the Soviet Dream by Julia L. Mickenberg.
Once upon a time, Soviet socialism was cool. If you were an independent, adventurous, liberated American woman in the 1920s or 1930s, it was a place to escape the constraints and compromises of bourgeois living. Julia L. Mickenberg recovers the lives of the suffragists, reformers, educators, journalists, and artists who came to Russia in search of more just, equitable, and satisfying social arrangements. And most in the end were disillusioned, some by mundane realities, others by horrifying truths. |
