After about three weeks of slow reading, I finished Vera Brittain's Testament of Youth. The post-war section lagged a little for me, but it was still a fascinating read.

This is on my all-time list, but it’s undeniable that the post-war section isn’t nearly as compelling as the earlier sections. I think in part it’s because she didn’t have the distance on the post-war that she did on her youth and the war, and in part because it’s obvious her husband didn’t want to be discussed, so there’s an emotional vacuum he otherwise would have occupied.

I’m not sure it’s in print and I’m quite sure it’s not available as an ebook, but a fascinating read is her war diary, Chronicle of Youth. Published posthumously, it was the major source for her account of the war years in Testament. It’s emotionally rawer and it’s interesting to see how her understanding changed over time.

I enjoyed the stories, some originals, some reprints, but I don't think I'd read the reprints before. 4/5

Next Up: The Annals of the Heechee by Frederik Pohl. I'm pretty sure I read this as a paperback sometime in the distant past. I bought this in a Frederik Pohl bundle back in 2011.

Although I'm mostly reading Horror this time of year, I'm slipping in a re-read of Oliver Twist with intent to immediately follow it with Jack Dawkins by Charlton Daines. Though I've read both before, I haven't done it in direct succession before.

Next is Soldier of Fortune by Kathleen McClure a book I picked up for free somewhere somehow.

This was a fun adventure. Steampunk-ish on an Earth colony. Not much was explained in the beginning. Everything wrapped up neatly at the end, though. But otherwise there wasn't anything here memorable. Rated D+ [2 stars].

Three on the go at the moment - Recalled to Life, book 2 in the Frank Hardy series by Wendy M Wilson. A little more story and little less history than the first, which is making for a more engaging read. Two re-reads for a break, A Pelican at Blandings and Buss's translation of Monte Cristo - I've been in the mood for another re-read for a while.

The Annals of the Heechee is Book 4. Yes, I can't recommend this one. Too much of Robinette Broadhead doing pointless angst, and one racist bit that a (only emphasised at this point) black character doesn't see as racist, to show what a post-racism society they're in now. Umm.. just no.

But mainly it's an awful lot of waffle for very little result. A shame.

Next up: Flight of a Witch by Ellis Peters. #3 in the Felse family series. I've definitely read this one before in paper, but I'm re-reading the early ones, as I now have up to #13 in ebook.

Started The Honjin Murders by Seishi Yokomizo. Not sure I'd be able to get into it, but after a couple of chapters it's working out fine.

Currently reading my magazines and westerns. Just finished Asimov Sept 2010. "The Sultan of the Clouds" by Geoffrey A. Landis was quite good. I'm reading the Dec 2010 Asimov now - when that is done, everything (books and magazines) from 2010 and earlier will have been read or listened to! 10 years is long enough for something to remain unread.

Reading Buchanan's Gamble by Jonas Ward now, almost done. Bought ebook westerns for my Mom, so I read them too. Mom doesn't want me to buy any more westerns, so I'm working my way through the last of the books. Still have plenty though including a couple of omnibuses.

The Twelfth Card by Jeffery Deaver. I remember watching the movie The Bone Collector when it first came out and really enjoyed the concept of it and it wasn't until this year I picked up the book and enjoyed it a lot, so I have been continuing the series since.
