Had another random freeze today, just after ejecting the device from my PC. I tried leaving it alone like a user suggested and the reader actually turned off on its own after a couple of minutes (something I noticed only because the light turned off - the screen didn't refresh). Turned it back up again and it was business as usual.

I have to say though that I haven't had any other problem besides these random freezes - everything works as it should.

No, it's not so obvious. It could just as easily be a hardware problem, like bad ram. He said it was ok on reboot, which would align with that.

Which is something I considered. Except that when I was running 4.30, the only issue I was having were the scan and fix prompts.

Btw, female here.

I suspect rebooting the reader might force it to reset or reread the database.

I am starting to see a pattern with this firmware. My problems seem to occur after I sideload one or more books, then eject the reader. The next time I connect the reader to the computer, I see the prompt to scan the reader for errors. If I let it scan and fix, no errors are reported. However, the reader then displays random weirdness, like not updating my reading position. So I did an experiment: I sideloaded an ebook, then ejected the reader and powered it off, then powered it back on and reconnected it to the computer. No scan prompt! I've done this several times now, and as long as I reboot the reader after sideloading an ebook, I have never yet had a prompt to scan the reader for errors. Also, the reader has not lost track of my reading position either.

Could it be the database is not being updated for sideloaded ebooks? I have also noticed problems when I delete a book, but I haven't yet tracked down the exact circumstances. For example, I don't know if deleting an ebook from the reader while connected to Calibre as opposed to deleting it from the reader while it is not connected to the computer makes any difference.

Anyway, I wonder if turning the reader off and then on again after sideloading books forces it to reread or reset the database. Just a thought.

Hmm -- interesting thoughts there, and I think it almost matches up to what I've been experiencing too.

I update fanfics on my device a lot, sometimes daily!, but thanks to a setting in KoboTouchExtended they just overwrite the existing ones and don't trigger the import process.

But uploading a new book did trigger the import process, and then I got the scan & fix prompt and then the reading position bug.

For my part, I'm not going to update my Kobos until Kobo releases a fix (or rather several fixes). I don't sync and seldom use wifi, so I can wait.
I too have decided to wait. Too many gotchas.

If it wasn't for the sync, I'd revert again. I'm keeping plenty of backups though and running an integrity check every time I connect.

The scan is triggered if the dirty flag on the filesystem is set. It's probably that the reboot is clearing the dirty. That should be checking the filesystem and if there are no issues clear the dirty bit. Or it could be cleared during the shutdown.

I have done some testing and it appears that when I sideload an epub, the next time I connect, I get the scan prompt. It doesn't happen with kepubs or PDF. I also tried downloading an epub using the browser, and had the scan prompt when I connected the next time.

That makes it look like the import of epubs is the culprit. My guess would be a process is left open that is keeping the filesystem open when connected to the device. The shutdown would close the process and let the filesystem close properly. That is also consistent with using calibre to replace a book. That avoids the import process.

I use calibre to sideload kepub on the fly, and get The message from Windows.

It won't surprise me if there is another way trigger it. But, testing without calibre being involved, I could only trigger it when importing an epub. And it does agree with what I have been seeing. I have been seeing the prompt a lot more with my Clara HD than my Libra H2O. And I tend to read epubs on the Clara HD but kepubs on the Libra H2O. The only epubs that end up on the Libra H2O are ones for testing something.

I didn't use calibre in my testing, except for the server when I downloaded the file. That was just to prove it wasn't triggered by calibre.

In my case, I use Calibre + KoboTouchExtended to send them as kepubs (or kepub.epubs or whatever they are).

I downgraded to 4.30. Have had enough of the crashing, the corrupt database warnings and not being able to load more than a handful of books on it before it went all bonkers again.

The USB-C port on mine seems to be wonky. It is located by Windows, then it isn't, then it is not being seen by Calibre. Is this hardware related only, or could this have been due to 4.31.? Because the last couple of mounts it registered right away. I need to know if it is hardware related, because if it is, I need to return and get an exchange unit, before it is too late.

ETA I am eternally grateful for having had 4.31. ! I will remember it as the firmware that forced me to learn how to have my collections played on automatically, after I sorted over a thousend books manually THRICE!

I agree with that because I've had the intermittent Kobo scan/fix thing on Windows for years. It started when I got my ClaraHD (launch date) and has been present on every new Kobo ever since (Forma, Libra2). I don't import many standard epubs anymore, just a couple for test purposes.

I also agree it's not (or, at least, not only) calibre-related. I've had it often enough when calibre wasn't open.

The only time it went away was when NiLuJe, followed officially by Kobo, updated bin/dosfsck. Even then the problem returned a few firmwares later.

I've had the scan problem intermittently for years too. But I've never had my Kobo lose the reading position, which happens now if I don't reboot after importing a kepub. I haven't tested with epubs, so I can't say if epubs behave the same way.
