if/when I get a touch I might look into it, but it could be a solution. |

I updated my desktop and touch 2 days ago when I hauled my computer and touch to my sister's place to connect to high speed and I am really regretting it. The screen looks crowded and I have the problem with very slow response to touches, including where I have to tap the screen in a blank spot to make the first tap do what it is supposed to. And when you tap the HELP button why does the store come up first? The slider at the bottom of my library takes forever to move to where I try slide it. Typing in the name in the search takes longer too.
My computer desktop, now that I am back at home on dialup takes a long time to load the recommended books and of course it has to do this before it downloads any books. I did try the Adobe download version of my ebooks but a few did not have the option and some of them came through with poor formatting and a pain to read. I am debating going back to 14 on the touch if I can and am hoping that the next firmware update fixes all these hassles. I just won't buy any more books from Kobo till then. I found 14 to be close to what I figured was perfect for me and this is just a step back. |

It is funny how people are having different experiences. I found that 14 was more sluggish and page turns slower. It was the same one both mine and my wife's touch. Upgrading to 16 made the touch more responsive and the text sharper. Now I think the addition to the main page is not really needed and it would be nice if you could turn this feature off but for me it is not a big deal. I am more than happy with this release and wouldn't go back to 14.

Some kind of "reset" might help with many issues in 16; in my case I downgraded to 14 and upgraded to 16 OTA again and most issues were gone; text is more clear in 16 and the screen is more steady, less "flickering" on changes etc. Having my favorites on the bottom for direct access I also like better; some more direct buttons / an iconbar in addition would make it perfect for me. (Just because Google switched from the black buttonbar to a drop down "home"-menu doesn't mean thats a better / more modern design for an eReaders Homepage as well )

I did a factory reset before I downloaded 16, mostly because I was worried about my bloated images folder. I still don't like 16. After I posted the above last night I was trying to read and the touch kept going unresponsive, I needed to do a pin in the back reset a few times. I haven't had to do that for a few months now. I also did buy one more book from Kobo yesterday and am on my fourth try at downloading it to the Kobo desktop. The pink line crawls across and takes over an hour to finish - and the book is nowhere to be found.
What I would really like to see too is some way that the images belonging to the books on my micro SD card would be stored on the micro SD card instead of taking up so much space in my onboard memory. |

Is a factory reset the same as pressing the reset on the back of the Kobo?
If not how does one do a factory reset. |

No and if memory serves (on the Touch) Kobo recommends holding the power button on for 15 seconds to make sure the device is off, then press and hold the home button and turn the device on. This does a complete factory reset which REQUIRES YOU TO SET UP AGAIN and WIPES BOOKS FROM YOUR DEVICE so make sure you have computer/internet access or you'll be without your books (you can't do it over your device wireless).

On a Kobo Touch (firmware v1.9.16) you can do a Factory Reset by going to:
Home>Settings>Device Information>Advanced and hit the "Factory Reset" box. Holding the power button off for a few seconds merely puts it in a "Power Off" state. That may imply a slightly lower battery drain, or not. There was a comment somewhere that powering on and off performs a sort of reboot, which clears stuff like Google Analytics data etc. You'd have to check the relevant thread to confirm what exactly it might do though. Powering off does not perform a factory reset, at least not on my device. But a Factory Reset as outlined above WILL wipe your device to the state it left the factory i.e. original firmware, and no books. |

Reason I ask is I am trying to help out someone down here in Mexico whose Kobo is unusable because of slow action for everything. I was going to start by doing a reset to see if it fixes the problem. We have internet access so he can easily go in and set up passwords etc if necessary. I believe is son set it up originally so he hasn't done it before. I wonder if it will mean he will have to update the desktop and firmware at the same time. |

When I did the factory reset I ended up deleting and redownloading the Kobo desktop and it wanted the Touch plugged in to the computer to update the firmware. Then it downloaded my books.
I have about 80 books from Kobo loaded on my Touch and every other book I have gotten from other sources are on my micro SD card. When I just had the Kobo books on, it looked like I had a lot of room left, only about 210 mb used. I put the SD card in (with about 600 books on it) and it took almost two hours to process - now my internal memory is more than half full with 760 mb used and 640 free. I have been wondering too what will happen when all those image files overwhelm my internal memory. I have looked at them and wondered if I can delete any of them? Would be nice if the whole image file could be moved to my micro sd card - lots of room there! |

I have 1000 plus books on an SD card. I managed to get acceptable speed by deleting all Kobo image files except Library_Full.parsed, Library_Grid.parsed and Library_List.parsed. The number of image files deleted was 3,000 plus. This led to a dramatic increase in performance and responsiveness. I have also stayed with firmware 1.9.14. |

I'm astonished at how long this issue with the 1.9.16 update has persisted. Things like little improvements can certainly wait for the next monthly update, but this double-press issue is a very serious bug which should have had the coders on overtime as soon as it was discovered.
The fact that it has been reported by so many different users suggests that it's not just a freaky occurrence. Do they actually have any testers checking this stuff before they upload it? Or did they just knock off early because of Xmas? A factory reset or the complicated process of going back to 1.9.14 are not acceptable solutions. A couple of months ago I would have had no hesitation recommend a KT to a friend, while today I'm seriously regretting my purchase. |

I've hit the limit several times already so I can tell you the Kobo Touch will tell you that your "Disk is Full" and to remove some files so that you can download the rest. As you read and erase (or just erase) onboard book/magazines/previews/newspapers you will free up space for files that it was unable to download in a previous sync. Don't worry the sync will not forget any files that it has failed to download previously. I believe the priority for downloads is as follows based on my experience: kobo ebooks, magazines, newspapers, firmware updates. I have noted that you need about 100MB free when a firmware update is available for it to download and install properly. Any less and it may download but it will fail.. Not to worry though even if it fails it doesn't screw anything up since the failure usually means it wasn't able to unpack the new firmware so it is not available to the system to run yet.
