Knight's Castle
Magic by the Lake
I couldn't recommend Eager's books more strongly.

Louise Fitzhugh's Harriet the Spy is $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. I remember reading and really liking this book as a kid. Note this is the 50th Anniversary edition - there is another version not on sale. The blurb page also says it's the first of four in the series - I didn't know there WAS a series...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EX4E29Y
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/har...ersary-edition

Spoiler:
Quote:
This special 50th Anniversary Edition of the classic and ground-breaking coming-of-age novel, Harriet the Spy, includes tributes by Judy Blume, Meg Cabot, Lois Lowry, Rebecca Stead, and many more, as well as a map of Harriet's New York City neighborhood and spy route and original author/editor correspondence.

Using her keen observation skills, 11-year-old Harriet M. Welsch writes down in her notebook what she considers the truth about everyone in and around her New York City neighborhood. When she loses track of her notebook, it ends up in the wrong hands, and before she can stop them, her friends read the sometimes awful things she's observed and written about each of them. How can Harriet find a way to keep her integrity and also put her life and her friendships back together?

The second book, The Long Secret, is worth reading. The latter two books are terrible and should be eschewed.

(They are also in KU, if you have that.) Cat's Guide reminded me a little bit of Helen Harper's Slouch Witch series, even though that's an unusual comparison for a YA title...

The Lost Kingdom of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine is on sale at Kindle US for $1.99. Levine won a Newbery medal in 1998 for another book, Ella Enchanted, so I'd expect this one to be pretty good too, and it gets 4.6 stars out of 5.0 at Kindle.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JYX7LUA

Spoiler:
Quote:
A teenage girl must overcome deep-rooted prejudice—including her own—to save her people in the Newbery Honor author’s fantasy adventure.

As a member of the Lakti people, Peregrine was raised to strive for excellence—and to look down on the Bamarre, whom she knows to be weak and cowardly. Always seeking the affection of her stern and powerful parents, Perry runs the fastest, speaks her mind, and gives no thought to their castle’s Bamarre servants.

But just as she’s about to join her father on the front lines of battle, she is visited by the fairy Halina, who reveals that Perry isn’t Lakti-born. She is Bamarre. The fairy issues a daunting challenge: against the Lakti power, Perry must free her people from tyranny.

If you missed this last time, when the first book was free, and the next two were on sale, you have another chance - the first two are free right now, although the third is not on sale. But the whole series is KU if you have have that...

The links are still good!

Built to Last by David MacAulay is on sale for $2.99.

It appears to combine his books Castle, Cathedral, and Mosque in one book.

Quote:
A nomad fashion's a home that’s meant to be built and rebuilt. A family tears down an old house and erects a new one in its place. Even the Eiffel Tower wasn’t meant to be anything more than temporary. As humans, we don’t always build things to endure the test of time. Built to Last brings together the award-winning author and artist David Macaulay’s creative, exacting thinking about buildings and designs that were crafted with a strength of structure and purpose that defy the everyday: Castle, Cathedral, and Mosque. This gorgeous volume includes newly researched information about each building and how it was built. And, for the first time ever, the Caldecott Honor–winning Castle and Cathedral appear in full color—with stunning new drawings that enrich the reader’s understanding of these structures, and capture intriguing new perspectives and details. Just as the buildings themselves were created to last, our interest in the structures themselves, the people who created them, and the purposes for which they were made endures as well. This impeccably researched volume—a necessary addition to the bookshelf of anyone interested in architecture—celebrates this spirit of endurance and serves as a reminder that building well and leaving something of consequence behind, whether a building, a design, or an idea, is still of the utmost importance.

Encyclopedia Brown was one of the first mystery series I remember reading, getting the books (if I remember correctly so many decades later) from Scholastic, ordered via the elementary school I went to. I guess it started something, because I'm clearly still a big mystery addict.

And right now, Encyclopedia Brown, Boy Detective, by Donald J Sobol, which is the first in the series, is on sale in the US for $1.99.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000UZQI60
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/enc...oy-detective-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
A Civil War sword...

A watermelon stabbing...

Missing roller skates...

A trapeze artist's inheritance...

And an eyewitness who's legally blind!

Theses are just some of the ten brain-twisting mysteries that Encyclopedia Brown must solve by using his famous computerlike brain. Try to crack the cases along with him--the answer to all the mysteries are found in the back!
