I thought the serial numbers are in a settings menu. So, you wouldn't have access to it on a defective device.

It really is an awful lot easier to use K4PC/K4Mac to do this.

If it is only the screen that is broken, you will never be able to type with accuracy, but you could fumble your way to the settings menu.

All maneuvering around would have to be guided through the use of repetitive screenshots.

As HarryT said, it's a lot easier to use K4PC but if you really have to and you don't mind putting in the effort...

Actually, the worst that can happen is Amazon will change its DRM, block downloading of retrievable files and/or put ebooks downloaded to a Kindle device in a hidden directory. Not that I think any of this is going to happen. Then again, I didn't think it would happen at Barnes & Noble either. (Yes, severely burned here and wary as a result.)

Sure hope you're right, but how do you know this?

I'm not trying to pick a fight, btw. On the contrary, I'm looking for reassurance that Amazon isn't going to pull any boneheaded BN moves.

I don't think there is any good basis for such assurance. Amazon have changed the encryption used in the various software implementations of Kindle readers several times. They've also worked hard to make hacking the hardware Kindles impossible via software.

But I do hope that Amazon won't do anything really silly.

Amazon has already done something really silly. They now have a new KFX format for eBooks with enhanced typesetting. I don't know if those eBooks are a different format or if they can have the DRM removed. The one test done by changing the extension to AZW3 and trying to remove the DRM failed but the test was flawed because the latest Calibre and the latest DRM removal plugin were not used. So the test was invalid.

Also, Calibre does not yet know about the new format. But an eBook with enhanced typesetting can be downloaded via USB and comes as n AZW3 version and can have the DRM removed.

KFX was found in eBooks with enhanced typesetting download to a Kindle PW2/3/Vouyager with the typesetting firmware.

Unlike Apple they don't quickly (usually within days) update their DRM every time it is cracked.
Unlike B&N they still offer discrete PC downloads.
They still support older hardware and older versions of software known to be cracked.

They update their DRM regularly but they don't seem to be DRM zealots.
(It *is* only optional, at publisher discretion, after all.)

But, it may no longer be possible to pull eBooks (with enhanced typesetting) from a Kindle PW2/PW3/Voyage and remove the DRM. It's very possible that Amazon changed the format of KFX eBooks such that they are not just AZW3 with some bit set to 1 to say to use the new typesetting.

The new typesetting is known to be embedded in the files so it is effectively a different format. (KF8.1?)
That is not exactly an encryption DRM issue.
