You are right about maps and the refreshing rate.
I want to modify my app for it work better with that kind of device. For example by adding buttons to navigate and not do it by dragging which might feel good with the refreshing rate.
Really thank you for your answer. Such a great community
Here's some more info for you: I had GSam battery monitor running for the last 10 days. I'm afraid the "screen" and "active" indicators aren't correct as I turn the device completely off every night. But you can see that pure reading causes very low drain. The times where the power drain is large, I was installing apps or the like. In the third picture, you can nicely see the drain when bluetooth and wifi is on (I was listening to music via bt headphones with musixmatch running to show the lyrics).

I also rooted with towelroot v1 now. Since it's kind of hard to find, here's the link I used:

Just install the app, run it, press "make it ra1n" and you should be rooted. My Kepler restarted on its own shortly afterward but no noticable problems since then.

Is anyone able to lower the minimum brightness of their Kepler device? The lowest brightness (at one notch) still seems too bright to me for night reading. I didn't want to root my device, but if I can get the minimum brightness lowered with rooting, I'm willing to give it a try!

I'm afraid you're out of luck there. Just tried setting the brightness to the lowest possible value (using Rootdim as well as changing the brightness config file directly). The result is that even though the typical 255 setting values exist, values from 1 to 30 result in the same brightness which probably corresponds to the lowest setting available in the official dialog. So I'm afraid the hardware only supports the 10 settings you can already access. Rooting won't help.

Thanks for testing this out for me sharkcow! Now I won't have to go through the trouble of rooting my Kepler Pro. Bummer that it can't be dimmed beyond the lowest setting though.

Would any of the owners kindly comment on the quality of the physical buttons on the sides of the device? Are they sturdy and easy to use? Neither the size nor the positioning seem very convenient.

The fact that they are placed fairly high on the reader simply means that it's more convenient (for me at least) to read with the Kepler inverted. A larger (although still small) problem is that the sides curve back behind the front (rather than out and then back like most tablets I've seen), causing the buttons to be recessed, and thus more difficult to firmly press unless held just right. As far as quality goes, they seemed good -- but that's probably a question you need to ask me in a year or two's time.

Thanks a lot for those screenshots. Helps a lot. Seems like battery is quite good when using it as a simple ereader (or map reader)
Thanks again

This is a show-stopper for me. I don't like bright lights. Without wishing to be a downer, I have a Boyue T62, and the front-light goes so low it's too low. Perfect. I don't understand why most manufacturers won't dim the light further. Maybe the low light exposes lack of uniformity. But the Boyue light stays uniform even at its lowest.

I like my lights lower than most people I know. I also read in a completely dark room. I read everything in night mode (dark screen, white text) at night now due to the light not being dim enough. AlReader does this well.

I was tempted by this one, but given the difference in specs this looks like it's based on "Kepler" (and not Kepler Pro) line. So not only there's difference in RAM/Flash, my biggest concern would be that either it will never be updated if it's a special one-off order by Russian distributor or it will be on a much slower update track than Kepler Pro.

Given the drastic changes in functionality between 1.7.5rc1 and 1.8.0 on Kepler Pro, getting that Russian Onyx Monte Cristo-branded devices is a huge risk for missing out on updates.

Can anyone with Kepler Pro in hand post the exact CPU id from their device?

This would appear to be the RK3026 (see this table) -- which is the chip that this table lists for the Monte Cristo.

Can any of the Kepler Pro owners please confirm if their Kepler works with something like this to flip the pages? Ideally in Google Play Books? I know it supports flipping with volume buttons on regular tablets/phones, not sure if it's the same with the standalone bluetooth button.
I've been longing for a remote to flip the pages on an e-ink reader for a while now, that might get me over the fence to buy Kepler Pro if it supports that.
