That should undercut any excuse for continued application of DRM to KFX versions of "publisher requested no DRM" books.

Yes, they can't have it both ways.

That's what Amazon's lawyers would argue. But if it walks and quacks like a duck? Also see comment about "personal documents".

Why no easy to use local converter from pdf/doc/docx/mobi/epub/azw3 to KFX on Mac/iOS/Android/Windows/Linux?
Why do you have to send pdocs to Amazon? Can we have a 3rd party audit of what they do with those user docs which might private, copyright, secret or whatever?

You can even run local copies of an LLM.

Don't send anything to any cloud system if you don't want the owners of the cloud seeing it. That just general privacy advice...IOW, if you want to keep something private, don't send it to other people. Especially people on the Internet. In this case, I'd convert with Calibre and side-load via USB cable.

That's what I do. Fortunately I don't need KFX. Calibre doesn't convert it. The plug-in uses an Amazon program unavailable on most OSes. I read everything as epub or PDF, with epub preferred.

I think you're conflating DRM with copy protection. All DRM is copy protection, but not all copy protection is DRM.

To stifle competition. The way they want us to see it, you didn't buy that Kindle reader, you bought a license to use it. Similarly, you didn't buy those books, you bought licenses to read them on Amazon-approved devices and software. Having an onerous, proprietary tool to let us make our own KFX files lets them get away with locking out competition without appearing to be a monopoly: "We're not locking out customers. See? They can convert anything they want to read on their Kindle."

(see what I did there?)

And it seems to be that the market is just too small for the EU legislators to care :-/

Is there a new updated version of the plugin that handles the new Readium LCP 2.5?

No. Readium sent a DMCA so they removed support to avoid losing the entire repo.

Thanks for the reply. Still, I hope a way is found so I can use my reader instead of the crappy app that comes bundled with purchased books.

You can probably still find the old version floating around somewhere, but if Readium has released a new version of LCP that DeDRM never supported, you probably won't ever be able to decrypt it, since nobody is working on that code anymore, AFAIK. The only solution at present is only to buy books that you can decrypt.

I was reading this. And it seems that at least in America it's now fully legal the project of NoDrm.

The EFF is arguing that such things are fully legal in an effort to challenge a law and court decisions that say the opposite. Have they won the appeal?

As far as I can tell the EFF has lost. See Matthew Green v. DOJ, No. 23-5159 (D.C. Cir. 2024) from earlier this month.

Perhaps they will appeal again to a higher court but for now the DMCA is still the law in the USA.
