The word Classic means something that is a perfect example of a particular style, something of lasting worth or with a timeless quality. The word can be an adjective (a classic car) or a noun (a classic of American literature). It denotes a particular quality in art, architecture, literature and other cultural artifacts. In commerce, products are named 'classic' to denote a long standing popular version or model, to distinguish it from a newer variety. Classic is used to describe many major, long-standing sporting events. Colloquially, an everyday occurrence (e.g. a joke or mishap) may be described as 'an absolute classic'.
So according to this definition, a classic doesn't just have to be old.

Um.... how can you know it has a "timeless" quality if it's only been around since 79?

I think for something to be "timeless" it has to be fairly old, yes. So, even your definition disagrees with you.

I disagree. Again, it's all subjective. Some of what some people call "classic" is absolute dreck. And this is part of the reason that classic is a really bad topic. It's not something that we can point to and say for sure that this is a classic. Some people will disagree. So it's best to have a topic for where books nominated either are or are not without t being someone's opinion. And yes, I do think HHG has a timelsss quality about it. Just because it's from 1979 does not mean it doesn't have such.

I agree with Elfwreck - let the process take it's course.

I know I'm dredging up an old thread, but can we please change December's topic from classic to something else?

I'm not quite sure what to have. The only thing for sure is that two classic month's a year is too many. There's nothing special about classic that it deserves two slots when no other topic gets two slots.

I actually agree with Jon on this. The question: What to read in December? How about something light like Juvenile/Young Adult that must be at least 200 pages long?

I do think we should revisit the topics for 2012.

Hmmm..good question. We'd probably have to base it off of paper books, as there is a drastic difference between paper & electronic.

So YA with 200+ print pages. That sounds OK to me. It's a topic we'll not have done.

I'd be fine with YA, although I don't really see a need to change the list for this year as it is. YA was discussed a bit in this thread IIRC and argued against as a separate category, don't remember the reasoning.

I would not mind once a year doing either Westerns or Pulp Fiction.
