Yes, for a while there used to be several (varying) titles in the British Library Crime Classics section that were free for a while but hardly at all recently.

Worth a look? Different countries treat that library differently as I've just noticed, so lists contain different selections:

A Question of Belief is the 19th in the excellent (IMO) Commissario Brunetti series by Donna Leon. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Question-Beli...dp/B003FS0K1I/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/a-question-of-belief-6

Spoiler:
Quote:
Donna Leon’s best-selling series featuring the principled, warmhearted Venetian Commissario Guido Brunetti has won her countless fans, critical acclaim, and international renown as one of the world’s best crime writers. In A Question of Belief, Brunetti must contend with ingenious corruption, bureaucratic intransigence, and the stifling heat of a Venetian summer. With his hometown beset by hordes of tourists and baking under a glaring sun, Brunetti’s greatest wish is to go to the mountains with his family, where he can sleep under a down comforter and catch up on his reading. But before he can go on vacation, a folder with court records has landed on his desk, brought by an old friend. It appears that cases at the local court—hardly known as a model of efficiency—are being delayed to the benefit of one of the parties. A creative new trick for corrupting the system, perhaps, but what can Brunetti do about it? And just when it looks like Brunetti will be able to get away, a shocking, violent crime forces him to stay in Venice. This is a stellar addition to Leon’s celebrated series: atmospheric, packed with excellent characters, and building to an explosive, indelible ending.

Dead Against the Lawyers by Roderic Jeffries is a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about 2 3/4 more days.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Dead-Against-...dp/B01DPFB028/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Envied for his success and for Charlotte, his beautiful wife much younger than himself, Radwick Holter is a fifty-eight year old man driven by money and lust.

Holter is a successful QC and member of the Hertonhurst Bar. Exceedingly proud of the professional reputation he has worked tirelessly to succeed, even at the cost of estranging himself from his family who he despises for their lack of ambition.

Living happily in a large and beautiful home in the countryside, he lives a simple life, largely fulfilled by his wife, his work and his Bentley.

Except strangely, for such a fierce and intuitive barrister, he is more naïve than he realises when it comes to creatures of the opposite sex and chooses to ignore the whispers in chambers about the unsuitability of his marriage.

When Holter arrives at work one morning to find a dead body in his own office, his world is torn apart.

The discovery is complicated when he realises the door to his collection of macabre murder weapons, souvenirs from old cases, is open, and there is an ominous trail of blood.

Detective Inspector Brock has no doubt that the solicitor was murdered and when a search proves that the locks to chambers have not been forced, things look bleak for those who cannot account for their movements the night before.

Anonymous letters, professional rivalries and a scandalous charge mean Holter is on trial for murder and must conduct his own defence — will he be successful? Is he guilty?

Dead Against the Lawyers is an intriguing mystery that will shock, surprise and delight readers in equal measure.

A Curious Beginning is the first in the two-book (so far) Veronica Speedwell series by Deanna Raybourn, who is perhaps better known for her Lady Julia Grey series. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Curious-Begin...dp/B00SI0B5F8/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/a-curious-beginning

Spoiler:
Quote:
In her thrilling new series, the New York Times bestselling author of the Lady Julia Grey mysteries, returns once more to Victorian England…and introduces intrepid adventuress Veronica Speedwell.

London, 1887. As the city prepares to celebrate Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee, Veronica Speedwell is marking a milestone of her own. After burying her spinster aunt, the orphaned Veronica is free to resume her world travels in pursuit of scientific inquiry—and the occasional romantic dalliance. As familiar with hunting butterflies as she is fending off admirers, Veronica wields her butterfly net and a sharpened hatpin with equal aplomb, and with her last connection to England now gone, she intends to embark upon the journey of a lifetime.

But fate has other plans, as Veronica discovers when she thwarts her own abduction with the help of an enigmatic German baron with ties to her mysterious past. Promising to reveal in time what he knows of the plot against her, the baron offers her temporary sanctuary in the care of his friend Stoker—a reclusive natural historian as intriguing as he is bad-tempered. But before the baron can deliver on his tantalizing vow to reveal the secrets he has concealed for decades, he is found murdered. Suddenly Veronica and Stoker are forced to go on the run from an elusive assailant, wary partners in search of the villainous truth.

And the second in the series, A Perilous Undertaking, has dropped from $12.99 to $5.99, still a lot, but not too bad for a most recent title.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Perilous-Unde...dp/B01EH1EL20/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/a-perilous-undertaking

Quote:
Veronica Speedwell returns in a brand new adventure from Deanna Raybourn, the New York Times bestselling author of the Lady Julia Grey mysteries...

London, 1887. Victorian adventuress and butterfly hunter Veronica Speedwell receives an invitation to visit the Curiosity Club, a ladies-only establishment for daring and intrepid women. There she meets the mysterious Lady Sundridge, who begs her to take on an impossible task—saving society art patron Miles Ramsforth from execution. Accused of the brutal murder of his artist mistress Artemisia, Ramsforth will face the hangman’s noose in a week’s time if Veronica cannot find the real killer.

But Lady Sundridge is not all that she seems, and unmasking her true identity is only the first of the many secrets Veronica must uncover. Together with her natural historian colleague Stoker, Veronica races against time to find the true murderer—a ruthless villain who not only took Artemisia’s life in cold blood but is happy to see Ramsforth hang for the crime. From a Bohemian artists’ colony to a royal palace to a subterranean grotto with a decadent history, the investigation proves to be a very perilous undertaking indeed....

Patriot Games is the first (per the blurb) or second (per SYKM, with whom I tend to agree in this case) in the Jack Ryan series by Tom Clancy. Although I really didn't (still don't) like Clancy's politics, I have to admit he wrote some pretty darn good thrillers early on - Red Storm Rising is still one of my favorite books, and I don't tend to like thrillers/war books. (Although the politics were always there, the politics really bled into his later books though, IMO, and so I personally quit reading his books somewhere along the way...) In any case, however, Games has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Patriot-Games...dp/B001QEAQQM/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/patriot-games

Spoiler:
Quote:
From Tom Clancy, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Jack Ryan novels--including his latest blockbusters Command Authority and Threat Vector--comes a gripping story of the Ryan family under fire. In an explosive wave of violence, an ultra-left-wing faction of the IRA is hunting one man for his act of salvation in an attempted assassination. And now Jack Ryan must pay…with his life.

Thank you for tracking it down. The Oxford Symposiums on Food and Cookery look fascinating even if drawn to our attention by a law-breaker.

Free today on Amazon UK - Murder, Suicide or Accident by Bernard Knight

Spoiler:
What exactly does a forensic pathologist do?

Written under a pseudonym by a practising full-time forensic pathologist and ex-Home Office consultant, the “inside story” is given for the first time of this macabre, yet vital profession which contributes to keeping Britain a country with one of the lowest murder rates in the world.

However, murder, although the topic which attracts all the publicity, is the smallest part of the function of a forensic pathologist.

The major part of his work concerns the investigation of other causes of sudden death — accidents, suicides and natural disease. These pages show how the community is best served by the careful reconstruction of traffic, domestic and industrial accidents and the documentation of natural diseases which adds to the sum total of preventive medical knowledge.

In spite of the relative rarity of murder investigations, a large part of the book is devoted to details of how the pathologist goes about his examination of the scene of a crime, the identification of the victim and the interpretation of the common methods of homicide.

The author shows how specialised medical experience assists in the reconstruction of deaths, whether it be by bullet, knife or rope, and he describes the salient features of death associated with sexual crimes, abortion and infant deaths.

Spoiler:
Austin Roberts has a plan. A plan he takes to his commanding officer, Brigadier Kylie…

They need to work together to bring the war to an end. They need to save the lives of tens of thousands. His plan is crazy … infiltrating a British agent into the Nazi British Free Corps.

With Hitler’s birthday coming up, it would be the perfect opportunity to assassinate Hitler.

With Hitler planning on parading bodyguards formed of British Fascists, it would be the perfect opportunity to bring the regime to its knees.

But who would be willing to put their life at risk?

They needed someone with enough confidence to carry out the assassination entirely on his own, with no assistance from the British at all.

Thirty-year-old Charlie Collins was serving his fourth month in the Military Detention Barracks in Colchester.

Sentenced to twelve years’ imprisonment, Collins doubted whether he’d survive. Convicted of mutiny, his death sentence had been reduced, but would that have been better?

Intelligent, quick witted and with the ability to improvise, Collins was Roberts’s man of choice for the operation.

When Collins’s train is hit, he takes the opportunity to escape from the Military Police, a perfect staging for the beginnings of Operation Hagen. Unsure of his own reasons, Collins wonders where his sudden patriotism comes from.

Arrested on suspicion of being a spy, Collins manages to escape and make his way to the German Embassy in Germany.

With his life on the line … Collins sets out to bring an end to Hitler’s propaganda…
