Yeah, if they've changed it, shouldn't be hard to find. However, I can't figure out the download link to the newest firmware so can't check. |

It seems "devmodeon" and "devmodeoff" should still work on firmware 5.0.178115.

As for always being right? However, could you please tell my spouse and children that? They appreciate a good laugh. |

which is funny because i am still set to rmsdk as epub engine and cannot switch back. i am worried to factory reset this device because without switching engines, i cannot open books in an acceptable way. i really think i should return this device and get a real kobo, i only got this tolino because the real units are not sold in germany and you need to pay a premium to get a good device. serves me a lesson to be not that cheap lol Last edited by user105; 05-26-2024 at 05:16 AM. |

Since the Kobo experts are gathered here, I would like to quickly mention that I have played with the Calibre driver so that the new tolinos are supported. See here. Maybe someone can take a look at the changes, i.e. do a small code review. I'm not that deep into it and don't want there to be any weird side effects (I haven't noticed anything like that with my Clara 2E though).

Just registered here to write about my journey to turn my tolino Vision Color to a Kobo Libra Color:
I started my journey with a fully updated tolino Vision color, running version 5.1.186250 It worked on my device, but it may brick yours. I was just happy to accept driving this device against the wall, but it worked. So proceed at your own risk. Steps: 1. Install the tolino-qt6-recovery-5.0.175773.zip recovery, which is for the Shine color model (kobo13 instead of kobo11) 2. After installing and rebooting, activate developer options via "devmodeon" in the search bar 3. Go to the last page of developer options and change product to Kobo in the tolino subsection 4. Let it reboot and settle 5. Install 5.1.184318 for the tolino Vision Color 6. Optional: Install 5.1.186250 to be on the latest version as of writing this post Explanations: - I could not find a Vision Firmware which allowed enabling developer mode to switch the device to act like a Kobo device, so I went for the earliest firmware for the color eink devices of kobo. The firmware for the shine color appears to miss some crucial features of the Vision, for example, Notebooks won't open and starting the Notebook app will crash the device. - Once the tolino is converted like this, it registers and activates with kobo just like a regular kobo - The change survives updating with official tolino firmware, as of this writing (this loophole could be closed in the future) - After updating to a Vision firmware, handwriting and notebooks work again - Updating to 5.1.186250 removes the developer mode. I am not sure if it's required, but it's gone. If needed, downgrading re-enables the developer mode - The device feels way snappier after changing it to identify itself as a kobo device |

Sorry for the noob question, but do you have an idea if the same thing would be possible with the Tolino Shine (5/BW) to turn it into a Kobo Clara BW, and where you would find the appropriate files to try it?

Maybe once / if Kobo releases a unified firmware for all currently supported devices. If the codebase is unified and older tolinos are upgraded, this might be possible. Kobo appears to have started locking down their bootloader and firmware, also using checksums in the upgrade packages. Perhaps it will be possible down the road, but who knows. They want to sell new devices and Tolino is probably dying, with weltbild now ceasing operations.

Would it be possible to make the Tolino Epos 3 a Kobo and to then be able to install patches and NickelMenu?
