I think that while reading a book, going to the previuos page is an uncommon action (at least it is for me).

I would like a feature that allows this mode.
New turning page mode:
- touch everywhere (full screen area) or swipe left2right to go to next page
- swip right2left to go to previuos page

That won't work. If you can tap everywhere on the screen, then you have no way to get out of the book or change settings other then to reboot. You have to have touch zones for bringing up the options.

Wrong! You could have a tap and hold. You could use the power button. ...

But there would have to be patches for these options if such could be accomplished. Tap & hold would also not work as that's used for dictionary lookup or highlighting.

I'm not sure that logically follows.

Yes, menu could also be accessed using swip up or down, or touching the top left corner; top right corner could be left for bookmarks.

No issues I think.

You guys are talking about these readers as if they have capacitive touch screens, like iPhones and other expensive devices.

They don’t. Their touch technology is considerably more primitive… which is how they can be cheaper and have long battery lives.

But, all of the currently available Kobo ereaders do have capacitive screens. I'm not sure which was the last one that was IR. And even with IR touch, everything being suggested would work. Or already is being used somewhere.

The issue is really getting the design right to handle page turns and all the other interactions. And making sure people understand it. I mean, it's already hard enough to get people to understand that there are actually options for the tap zones, let alone one were it looks like the only way to exit a book is to finish reading it.

And yes, someone would post that problem with 24 hours of this function being added: "I selected the new page turning option and now I can't get back to the home screen unless I finish the book or turn the device off. Kobo is $#*&#&#. I'm never buying Kobo again."

Capacitive is cheap. Maybe the cheapest. Some older touch eInk screens used IR because it doesn't reduce the reflected light. The Capacitive and Resistive screens have additional layers which slightly reduce the light. Part of the reason why most now have front lights.
The original Kobo Aura H2O used IR, which is why it has a whiter screen than the Libra (Capacitive). With no front light it's the brightest of PW3, PW4 and Libra.
I've used older eReaders such as Sony PRS350, Sony T1, Kindle DXG, Kindle Keyboard, Story Cover, Nook Simple Touch, Kobo Touch (C version). I don't know which touch technology the Touch ones use, but all are greyer than PW3, PW4, Libra, H2O etc because they are older design of screens, the non-touch models being mostly the oldest.
Oddly the worst I have is the Kobo Touch (C version), but that's due to worse ghosting than any other eInk screen I've seen.

IR may use more power than capacitive unless clever programming is used. I suspect to mitigate it that the scan LEDs on time and speed is reduced till a touch is detected. You can see an initial delay on the sketch application on the original H2O. Capacitive can be very low power. IR uses a row of LEDs on two edges and a row of phototransistors (or diodes) on the opposite two rows. The black plastic bezel, or black layer under the bezel is transparent to IR and is a light pipe and set of lenses.

I don't care about other peoples problems.

And although that excuse comes up a lot (to much customer support), Kobo doesn't seem to mind. They completely redo the Home screens, rearrange menus, added the fast page turn, continue to field calls about Adobe page numbers on the side, ...

IMO, YMMV.

Go back and reread the posts. "Tap & hold would also not work as that's used for dictionary lookup or highlighting." is an irrelevant concern; we want a reading mode.

So losing the ability to select a word for dictionary lookup while reading is irrelevant? Losing the ability to highlight text while reading is irrelevant?

Yes. It is a reading mode. 99.9% of my time is reading. If I want to lookup something in the dictionary, make it a non-primary function. As far as highlighting, that is something that I do 0.005% of the time, so to me it is irrelevant.

Stating that it can't be done because it currently works a certain way makes no sense to me.

IMO. YMMV.

I can understand that people want dictionary lookup, highlighting, bookmarks, facebook, fast forwarding, ... The current mode is fine for all that.
