Nelson has some of their study Bibles on sale, too. The study Bibles come up on sale so often that I decided not to post the sale. If anyone wants to know the details, however, just post a message or PM me to that effect.

This is a Christianbook Daily Deal for today (Thursday). Thursday here is just about over. I don't know if Amazon was just matching the price for the day. I'm posting because this is such a great price on a great book and am hoping that the price of $2.99 will last long enough for everyone who would want this ebook to be able to get it at that price.

Here's the listing for free ebooks at olivetree.com, but in order to add them to your account, they have to be downloaded at least once from one of the Olive Tree app. After that, they're available in all of the apps from then on, even when the book is no longer free.

I got a splash screen when I logged into the Android app that made it sound like the NIV and NKJV will be free at Olive Tree from now on. I'm not positive though, so if you want one of these, maybe download it once sooner rather than later.

Yeah, I downloaded both of those a couple of weeks ago. So it's not a one-day free offer, but I don't know how long they will stay free.

I noticed that Nelson also has a free NIV and NKJV right now for their app. That seems too serendipitous to be coincidental.

For those who are not familiar with John Dominic Crossan . . . . he may be best known as a prominent member of, and sometimes spokesman for, the Jesus Seminar. The Jesus Seminar, which was active in the 1980's and 90's, ostensibly had the goal of determining what the real, "historical" Jesus actually said and did. The historical Jesus, in their minds, stands in contrast to the "Christ of faith," which is the one that is described in the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John).

They concluded (although it seems to me that this conclusion was a foregone conclusion, because of the presuppositions, beliefs, and bent of those who participated) that much of what the Gospels said about Jesus--what he said and did--didn't really happen. One aspect that they seemed to take umbrage to was the accounts of supernatural acts--miracles--by Jesus. They would believe that those were ascribed to Jesus by "the community" (of Christians) years after Jesus lived. Furthermore, they would believe that many of the words that the Gospels said that Jesus spoke actually were put into his mouth by that community, too. The words of Jesus that they would especially believe to unauthentic would be any in which Jesus stated or implied that he was the Son of God, the Messiah, etc.

Crossan agrees with the conclusions of the Seminar, conclusions which make Jesus essentially a mere, ordinary man (although exceptional in non-miraculous ways). Interestingly, however, Crossan has written what seems like an endless number of books on this Jesus, reflecting an obsession that is hard to explain given his view of Jesus.

I'm not discouraging you from purchasing or reading the book, but I do feel that it is important to make you aware of his viewpoint about Jesus. What he says in the book surely is going to reflect that viewpoint.

Let us know, when you get through, what you think about the book, the discussion, etc. I am familiar with the book about which you speak, but I have not read it nor done any real perusing of it.

There is a really interesting debate, too, that William F. Buckley moderated (which tells you that it's been quite a few years ago) between Crossan and a prominent evangelical scholar, whose name escapes me at the moment (it seems like that is happening more and more often the older that I get. ha). I'll try to dig up the audio, which I found free somewhere on the Web a few years ago, and post it on the Audiobooks thread.

Discussions of compatibility between the Jesus Seminar's conclusions and Christian faith probably belong in the Politics and Religion forum. I will note, however, that Crossan not only was a Catholic priest until 1969, but continues to count himself a Christian. I'd expect either of those should provide ample justification for obsession with Jesus and Scripture.
