Book Description
Publication Date: July 1, 2014

Chthon was Piers Anthony’s first published novel in 1967, written over the course of seven years. He started it when he was in the US Army, so it has a long prison sequence that is reminiscent of that experience, being dark and grim. It features Aton Five, a space man who commits the crime of falling in love with the dangerous, alluring Minionette and is therefore condemned to death in the subterranean prison of Chthon. It uses flashbacks to show how he came to know the Minionette, and flash-forwards to show how he dealt with her after his escape from prison. The author regards this as perhaps the most intricately structured novel the science fantasy genre has seen. It was a contender for awards, but not a winner.

Actually only free @ Amazon, where I suspect it's a glitch freebie since all of the other stores I'd been checking earlier which would have price-matched it by now have it at $0.99.

Agreed. Sorry for the error; I've corrected it in my OP.

I'd already listed today's "official" Open Road Media freebie in the General Fiction and Literature - 2014 thread. For the convenience of those who read this thread, I'll cross post it here:

Free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:

Wizard Weather by Janet Morris (ISFDB, Wikipedia), another story in her popular Sacred Band of Stepsons (Wikipedia) sub-series within the very popular Thieves' World (Wikipedia) shared world fantasy anthology series, this installment originally published in the Storm Season volume out from Ace Books in 1982.

Tempus' Stepsons on their first mission....

When Askelon of Meridian, lord of dreams, and Jihan, Froth Daughter, come to Sanctuary, a killing mist precedes them and everything changes for Tempus and the Sacred Band of Stepsons and even the local storm god. In the course of this story, Nikodemos receives from Askelon a dream-forged panoply; Tempus' sister and Askelon of Meridian join forces, and the Froth Daughter lends her inhuman aid to Tempus' Sacred Band. Stepsons die and events are set in motion that reverberate through the entire Sacred Band series as even the gods contest in Sanctuary's heavens.

The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms for $1.99

This month's Orbital Drop book is "The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms" by N. K. Jemisin, for $1.99 from B&N, Google, iTunes, and Kobo (links on the Orbital Drop page). Amazon may or may not price-match since it's Hachette.

Amazon had this for $1.99 as the SF Kindle daily deal 11/3/2013.

Thanks!

I've wanted this for quite a while. I read this when it first came out, back when Piers Anthony was a 'serious' writer, rather than an 'entertainer' of improbable fictions for adolescents - not that there's anything wrong with being a child for 30-80 years.

This is a great first novel.

X-link from the Mystery/Suspense megathread, since this sfnal what-if political terrorism thriller was originally out from Tor Books' Forge imprint and may be of interest to AH aficionados.

Free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon: books #1-3 in the Jeremiah Trilogy by Michael A. Smith, which posits a US where religious extremism has taken over, set up an attempted utopian colony, and is using genetically engineered plot devices to try and trigger the apocalypse.

A few sf/fantasy bargains I noticed at Kobo for $2.99 each unless otherwise specified (likely price-matched elsewhere as well, valid for Canada and probably the US) but I'll just provide the links there since at least one is couponable:

In Winter's Shadow (couponable) by Gillian Bradshaw (ISFDB, Wikipedia), 3rd in her Down the Long Wind trilogy of YA Arthuriana. All three books in it placed on the Locus lists for Best Novel of the Year nominations, and this Sourcebooks edition is reprinted from the 1982 Simon & Schuster original. The 1st in series was a deep-discount sale title a couple of years ago, which you might already have picked up.

Etiquette & Espionage (not couponable) by Gail Carriger (ISFDB, Wikipedia), the 1st in her Finishing School series of YA steampunk + paranormal boarding school adventures, which is a prequel series to her popular Parasol Protectorate quintet, set some 50 years earlier in the timeline, out from Little Brown & Co.

Some titles from Orion's Gollancz imprint (not couponable in Canada):

Altered Carbon & The Steel Remains by Richard Morgan (ISFDB, Wikipedia), a hard sf suspense (1st in Takeshi Kovacs series) and a fantasy epic adventure respectively.

Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds (ISFDB, Wikipedia), a space opera epic, 1st in eponymous series.

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch (ISFDB, Wikipedia), 1st in the Gentleman Bastard series of fantasy adventures. There's an omnibus editon of the first two books available, but actually at the current prices it's cheaper to get this one at $2.99 on sale, and then even if the $9.99 of the second doesn't drop later, it's still a $1 savings over the current omnibus cost.

The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie (ISFDB, Wikipedia), 1st in his popular The First Law series of darker-and-edgier high fantasy heroic adventures.

I don't know how long the prices will last, but Carriger's book has been on sale for the past week, probably to promote the upcoming new one, and may stay a while longer, and the Gollancz things weren't discounted a week ago when I checked on something else from them, IIRC.

Last edited by ATDrake; 10-13-2014 at 04:20 AM. Reason: Bold title, and add coupon status.

Also $2.99 Lockdown by Alexander Gordon Smith [FS&G] at most retailers. I've read the entire Escape From Furnace series and recommend them. YA but scary and lots of suspenseful action.

Quote:
Furnace Penitentiary: the world’s most secure prison for young offenders, buried a mile beneath the earth’s surface. Convicted of a murder he didn’t commit, sentenced to life without parole, “new fish” Alex Sawyer knows he has two choices: find a way out, or resign himself to a death behind bars, in the darkness at the bottom of the world. Except in Furnace, death is the least of his worries. Soon Alex discovers that the prison is a place of pure evil, where inhuman creatures in gas masks stalk the corridors at night, where giants in black suits drag screaming inmates into the shadows, where deformed beasts can be heard howling from the blood-drenched tunnels below. And behind everything is the mysterious, all-powerful warden, a man as cruel and dangerous as the devil himself, whose unthinkable acts have consequences that stretch far beyond the walls of the prison.
Together with a bunch of inmates—some innocent kids who have been framed, others cold-blooded killers—Alex plans an escape. But as he starts to uncover the truth about Furnace’s deeper, darker purpose, Alex’s actions grow ever more dangerous, and he must risk everything to expose this nightmare that’s hidden from the eyes of the world.

The Mirror Empire by Kameron Hurley is part of Amazon's deal of the day today and only $1.99 Amazon US

"Hurley reuses old tropes to excellent effect, interweaving them with original elements to create a world that will fascinate and delight her established fans and appeal to newcomers. Readers will blaze through this opening installment and eagerly await the promised sequel."- Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

"This is a hugely ambitious work, bloody and violent, with interestingly gender-flipped politics and a host of factions to keep straight, as points of view switch often. Although it is a challenging read, the strong narrative thread in this new series from Hurley (God's War) pulls readers through the imaginative tangle of multiple worlds and histories colliding."- Library Journal (Starred Review)

"With vividly inventive world building and a fast-paced plot, The Mirror Empire opens a smart, brutal, and ambitious epic fantasy series. Book two is already on my must-read list." - Kate Elliott, author of the Spiritwalker Trilogy

Peter F Hamilton's Void trilogy is available for a total of £3.17 in the current Autumn Sale at Amazon UK. (0.99 for the first two, 1.19 for the third, just to be awkward.)

The first one's here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003GK219E

I have mixed feelings about Hamilton, myself, and already have a couple of his books unread on my TBR, but what the heck, that's all three for less than the cost of the book I'm currently reading.

I personally enjoyed his Void Trilogy quite a lot, but I also enjoyed his Commonwealth saga in the same universe. That's quite a bargain for how many pages of reading material you get!
